Boy. A lot of those sets look different than what we saw in the original “Sleeping Beauty.” I was kind of hoping it would be a little more faithful to the animated movie, but I suppose this could still be entertaining. I’ll just have to wait and see.
A). Angelina Jolie NAILED it, just like I knew she would from the moment I heard the casting choice.
B). Elle Fanning ASTOUNDED me in Super 8, so I’m confident in her abilities as well.
C). But…what are the floating mermaid things? Why do they look so Oz The Great and Powerful – y?
D). I’m nervous about the whole not-born-evil angle, it could be really well done but I hope they don’t soften Maleficent’s edge TOO much.
The director of Maleficent, Robert Stromberg, was the key production designer for Oz and for Tim Burton’s Alice, so you can see a lot of the same design sense. I got to chat with Stromberg at a science fiction conference (nice guy–very open to speaking to me), and asked him if he was using a design influenced by the Eyvind Earle designs for Sleeping Beauty. He said not so much, and if memory serves, explained that while he loved the design of Sleeping Beauty, that replicating the designs too much seemed too limiting, or would make the film seem too derivative, or something like that (I don’t remember his exact words). I think this film looks, from the clip, very promising. Perhaps more so than Oz, which looked interesting, and which I wanted to like, but which just didn’t seem to work.
