So there isn’t gonna be an icon or general theme for this year? Or is that just yet to be revealed? And the roaming street performers sounds a lot like what Busch gardens did last year.

That does seem to be the case. All the billboards and promotional ticket displays around town focus on The Walking Dead and a few of the other IP-based houses. They’ve abandoned the formula to try something new. We’ll find out if it’s successful soon enough.

Yes, the roaming scares does follow in the footsteps of Howl-O-Scream last year. And I thought it was quite successful there, so I’m looking forward to seeing how Universal pulls it together.

I think they used to do all roaming scares back in the early days of HHN so I wouldn’t call it a Busch Gardens thing.

I wouldn’t say that Busch Gardens copied HHN last year though. The roving Scareactors that HHN used to have existed before they introduced Scare Zones, which in fact originated at Knotts.

I’d say BGT got their idea more from BGW. Didn’t Busch Gardens in Williamsburg do the roving hoards in 2010?

Maybe it’s just me but aren’t there normally a LOT more houses? like closer to 10 or 12?…

      1. Ricky Brigante

Nope. 7-8 houses has become the norm in recent years. But when adding in the scare zones, the list of individually themed experiences does reach 12+. This year, however, there will be no named scare zones in favor of park-wide scares, anywhere, anytime.

So this year we will not be seeing any themed areas of the park? I felt that the scare zones are what made HHN a step above the rest. Each scare zone were like mini houses, the way they were themed and decorated. And while I think the concept of “no where to escape” is interesting, I will be a little disappointed if they have completely gone away from no themed areas (which it sounds like they have.)

THe streets are being themed as we speak. Central Park, KidZone, and World Expo all have theming up.

That is good to hear; puts my mind at ease. I have not been to Universal in a few weeks, so I think I need to drive over there and get a sneak peak.

D’aw? No theme or icon? Come on, HHN, that’s the best part of the event!

I’m excited to see how the Walking Dead and Silent Hill houses fare this year since they have an extremely strong following, but I’m sort of bummed with the lineup this year. The four licensed houses sound cool, but the other three houses just seem like throwaway ideas. A gothic church taken over by gargoyles. A mansion with a murderous past. Universal’s monsters reimagined. *yawns*

Contrary to what others may say about the scare zones, I think it is a very interesting idea to have it park wide. Last year had complaints of scare zones and mazes being crammed into areas of the park and leaving others as “dead space” *crowd boos*. With the scare zones being all over the place, it will keep people on their feet wondering where the next scare will be.

Overall, I’m somewhat disappointed with how Universal is doing things this year, but hopefully they’ll prove us wrong opening night.
