Video: Dance-Off with the Star Wars Stars is bigger and badder than ever during Star Wars Weekends 2011 at Walt Disney World

The uber-popular Hyperspace Hoopla (HOOPLA!) has returned once again to Disney’s Hollywood Studios for Star Wars Weekends 2011 and it’s more impressive than ever. Each year the nightly stage show during the Star Wars-themed special event draws more and more people and this year Disney gave the show a huge upgrade by moving it to a new stage in front of the giant Sorcerer Hat. The stage allows hundreds to watch the show comfortably, awaiting the highlight of ever year’s performance: Dance-Off with the Star Wars Stars.

The theme of this year’s hilarious dance-off is rock music and the teams are simple. It’s the “Good Guys” against the “Bad Guys” as Emperor Palpatine, Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and other Star Wars baddies show off their stuff against Chewbacca, Ewoks, Queen Amidala, Ahsoka Tano, and more heroes of the Saga. In addition to a bigger stage, the show now sports plenty of loud pyrotechnics and a bright screen sporting graphics supporting each act.

Watch a video of the full 2011 Dance-Off with the Star Wars Stars as performed on May 21:

Songs featured in the “competition” section of the dance-off include AC/DC’s “Back in Black,” Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle,” Metallica’s “Enter Sandman,” and Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It.” The show concludes with a rapid-fire compilation of contemporary hits featuring artists including Lady Gaga, Willow Smith, Cee Lo Green, and the Black Eyed Peas.

For quicker access to the best two dances from this year’s show, I’ve segmented them out into separate video clips:

Chewbacca dances as Axl Rose with an Ewok dressed as Slash to Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome to the Jungle”:

Darth Vader and Stormtroopers dance to Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”:

And here are a few photo highlights:

Hyperspace Hoopla and the Dance-Off with the Star Wars Stars now take place on this impressive new stage. Thank the Empire for that one.
Emperor Palpatine leads Darth Maul, Jango Fett, Boba Fett, and a pair of guards.
The Cantina band joins in the Good Guys side.
Chewy does his best Axl Rose.
And an Ewok does his best Slash.
Vader and his Stormtroopers rock out to Metallica.
Leia is taken prisoner during 'Enter Sandman'
Aurra Sing joins in the fun.
But the Good Guys say 'We're not gonna take it' and fight back.
More rebellion.
Amidala tells off Vader.
This Gamorrean Guard knows how to move.
A Sandtrooper and an Ewok do a duet.
Vader says 'Forget You' to Amidala and Zam Wessel.
Aurra Sing, Chewbacca, and Kit Festo whip their hair back and forth.
Luke and Leia have the time of their lives...
...which gets a little awkward.
To end it all, C-3PO does (what else?) the robot.

I’ve always dreamed of slashing ewoks…but that ewok rocked the slash himself! ROCK ON!!!!

I’m sorry to bring this to light but the video shows the “good guys” to not be good. How? They lost the contest fairly as the audience was not intimidated by the Dark Side; the “good guys” then throw a fit and refuse to accept the decision. It encourages “poor sportsmanship” as well as encourages the young to “act out” if they do not get their way. Had they shown “good sportsmanship” they would have taken the defeat with grace and shown that it is O.K. to not ALWAYS win/get-your-way.

I am glad that my son did not learn that when I took him for his ninth birthday. There are few worse things than telling your child that just because Star Wars/Disney showed it was good does not mean it actually is. I hope they fix this and show that it is O.K. to not always be the winner. Perhaps even encourage “more practice” for next time?

Hey Just saw your video over on Topless Robot a Sci-fi Geek site I read. I just put in a link back to the website as they referenced it from another website

Thanks! The video is certainly spreading… as it does every year. The Dance-Off always splits fans into those who find it hugely entertaining and those who are offended by its very existence. I always enjoy it.

I nearly died watching Vader dance to Beat it! I’m not really a MJ fan but when he came out with the rhinestone glove? I nearly died laughing. My favorite was the either the Jawa with the Stormtrooper lieutennant helmets banging on the helmets while chewy was doing his ‘thing’ or the duet with the ewok and the trooper.
