Few franchises have managed to bring generations of fans together quite like Star Wars. Nearly 50 years after the original movie arrived in theaters, Disney is finding new ways to keep its most recognizable characters in the spotlight.
Now, one of the franchise’s longest-serving stars is officially returning for another appearance, although this particular project might catch longtime fans by surprise.
The announcement comes as Disney and Lucasfilm prepare several major Star Wars releases, including new movies and television projects designed to expand the galaxy far, far away.
However, this latest development takes the franchise somewhere audiences have never experienced it before.
And for one legendary performer whose connection to Star Wars dates back to 1977, it means adding another unusual credit to an already remarkable career.
A Familiar Face Is Officially Returning
Lucasfilm has confirmed that Anthony Daniels will reprise his role as C-3PO for an upcoming Star Wars project, continuing an association with the franchise that began nearly five decades ago.
Daniels first portrayed the beloved protocol droid in Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), appearing alongside R2-D2 as audiences were introduced to George Lucas’ universe.
Since then, the actor has become one of the franchise’s most consistent performers.
Daniels holds the distinction of appearing in every theatrically released Star Wars movie to date, including The Mandalorian & Grogu (2026).
While other original cast members have stepped away from their roles or passed away, Daniels has remained closely connected to the character.
His latest return, however, won’t involve a traditional movie or Disney+ television series.
Instead, Disney is bringing C-3PO into an entirely different entertainment experience.

Disney Reveals an Unexpected New Adventure
Disney, ESPN, Lucasfilm, and the NFL have joined forces for Funday Football, an animated alternative broadcast of the championship game set inside the Star Wars universe.
The special presentation will transform the live football action into a Star Wars-inspired experience, allowing viewers to follow the game through an animated version of the galaxy far, far away.
Daniels has already recorded new dialogue for the project.
In a recently released promotional teaser, Disney recreated a memorable sequence from Star Wars: A New Hope (1977), showing C-3PO and R2-D2 arriving on Tatooine in an escape pod.
The two droids wander through the desert before their conversation takes an unexpected turn toward football.
After R2-D2 communicates through his familiar electronic beeps, C-3PO realizes they’re apparently heading to the Super Bowl.
The protocol droid then enthusiastically declares that he’s ready for football.
It’s a playful combination of Star Wars nostalgia and professional sports, with Daniels providing the familiar voice that fans have recognized for decades.
But the project represents more than another crossover promotion.

A Major First Is Coming in 2027
Although ESPN has experimented with animated football broadcasts before, Star Wars Funday Football will mark the first time the concept has been used for the Super Bowl itself.
The format debuted with Toy Story Funday Football in October 2023, presenting the Atlanta Falcons’ matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars through an animated environment inspired by Pixar’s franchise.
That broadcast earned three Sports Emmy Awards.
ESPN followed with The Simpsons Funday Football in December 2024, featuring the Cincinnati Bengals and Dallas Cowboys.
A third presentation, Monsters Funday Football, arrived in December 2025 for the Philadelphia Eagles and Los Angeles Chargers game.
Now, the concept is moving to football’s biggest stage.
Super Bowl LXI takes place February 14, 2027, with the animated presentation airing alongside the traditional live broadcast.
Viewers can watch the special version through Disney+, the ESPN App, Disney Channel, and Disney XD.
That gives families another way to experience the championship without missing the actual football action.

Another Iconic Villain Is Joining the Release
C-3PO isn’t the only familiar Star Wars character involved in Disney’s football plans.
Darth Vader will also participate in the promotional campaign, appearing in segments featuring interviews with NFL players during Monday Night Football.
Disney hasn’t announced who will provide Vader’s voice.
One possibility involves technology connected to the late James Earl Jones, whose unmistakable performance helped define the villain.
Before Jones died in 2024, arrangements were made to recreate his voice using artificial intelligence for future Star Wars appearances.
A similar approach was previously used for Darth Vader in Fortnite.
However, Disney hasn’t confirmed whether that technology will be used for the upcoming football segments.
For now, Vader’s involvement is official, but the identity of his voice performer remains unknown.

What Other Star Wars Projects Are on the Way?
The football crossover arrives during an especially important period for Lucasfilm.
Disney is preparing to celebrate Star Wars’ 50th anniversary in 2027, with several projects scheduled throughout the year.
Season 2 of Ahsoka will continue Rosario Dawson’s story on Disney+, while Star Wars: Starfighter (2027), starring Ryan Gosling and directed by Shawn Levy, arrives in theaters May 28.
The original Star Wars: A New Hope (1977) will also return to theaters February 19, introducing the classic adventure to another generation.
Together, these releases show Disney’s commitment to keeping the franchise active across multiple entertainment platforms.
A Surprising Star Wars Return Worth Watching
Anthony Daniels’ latest appearance proves that C-3PO still has plenty of opportunities beyond traditional Star Wars storytelling.
Nearly five decades after audiences first met the nervous golden droid, Daniels is preparing to introduce him to an entirely new kind of event.
And with Disney planning even more Star Wars celebrations throughout 2027, this unexpected collaboration could be just the beginning.
