Over the past decade, the park has systematically shed its legacy as a working movie studio, reinventing itself as an immersive powerhouse anchored by Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, Toy Story Land, and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. With ongoing updates across the park, it feels as though Imagineering is constantly working to polish every square foot of the property.
Yet, as theme park fans and parkgoers continue to point out across social media, Hollywood Studios is still haunted by awkward “ghost zones” that stick out like a sore thumb. While fans constantly debate the fate of various parts of Animation Courtyard, there is another neglected space sitting right next door that presents a much bigger headache for park planners: Pixar Place, now officially referred to as Pixar Plaza.
Despite being steps away from two of the park’s biggest crowd-drawers, Pixar Plaza remains a relatively quiet, dead-end corridor that feels out of step with modern Disney standards. Even worse, a closer look at its location reveals a physical layout that could make it difficult for Disney to expand it substantially without significant redevelopment.
The Transformation Machine That Left One Spot Behind
To understand why Pixar Plaza feels so out of touch, one has to look at how rapidly Disney’s Hollywood Studios evolved around it. In the 1990s and early 2000s, the park operated under a studio backlot concept. Guests strolled down simulated city streets, peeked into production-themed soundstages, and took trams through behind-the-scenes-style environments.
As actual film production moved away from Florida, Disney recognized that the working studio theme was fading. The company responded with a massive reinvestment program. The Streets of America were cleared away to build Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The iconic Great Movie Ride was replaced with Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. The former backlot area was transformed into Toy Story Land.
Every major renovation moved Hollywood Studios further away from passive tours and closer toward active, highly immersive worlds. Yet, wedged near these major expansions sits Pixar Plaza—a relatively narrow corridor that can feel frozen in an earlier era of the park. While neighboring lands bustle with guests, Pixar Plaza can feel like an accidental detour into a quieter side street.
What Is Actually in Pixar Plaza Right Now?
For guests wandering past Walt Disney Presents, Pixar Plaza offers an odd mix of character meet-and-greets and themed food offerings. Currently, the area features:
The Edna Mode Experience: A dedicated character meet-and-greet where guests pose with the legendary fashion designer from The Incredibles inside her sleek, modern studio setting.
Pixar Character Meet-and-Greets: Character encounters featuring popular Pixar personalities such as Mr. and Mrs. Incredible, Frozone, Sulley from Monsters, Inc., and other Pixar characters; lineups are subject to change.
Neighborhood Bakery & Snack Offerings: Small food stands serving themed snacks and refreshments, including Pixar-inspired treats. Food offerings can change over time.
While meeting Edna Mode or grabbing a snack is a fun pit stop, there is currently no major ride or theatrical show in Pixar Plaza itself.
This was not always the case. The area evolved from the park’s former Mickey Avenue and was rethemed as Pixar Place in 2008 as part of the opening of Toy Story Mania! Designed with Pixar-inspired architecture and theming, the area felt lively, serving as the entrance to one of the park’s most popular attractions.
However, when Toy Story Land opened in 2018, Disney relocated the entrance to Toy Story Mania! into the new land. Pixar Plaza subsequently lost its primary role as an attraction. Disney temporarily rethemed the strip into “Municiberg” for an Incredibles-themed experience, but after that overlay ended, the area eventually returned to a more general Pixar theme. Today, it functions primarily as a character meet-and-greet and snack area, and it remains a terminating corridor within the park.
Squeezed Out: Why Pixar Plaza Is Situated in a Challenging Location
When theme park fans ask why Disney doesn’t simply build a new dark ride or a family coaster inside Pixar Plaza, the answer comes down in part to real estate geography: Pixar Plaza occupies a relatively constrained location within the existing park layout.
1. The Red-Brick Dead End
Unlike Toy Story Land or Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, which are larger lands with multiple entry and exit points, Pixar Plaza is a narrower, linear corridor that terminates near the end of the block. Disney’s own accessibility information identifies Pixar Plaza as being at the “End of block near archway.”
That configuration presents a different circulation challenge from that of a larger land area with multiple routes through it. Guests entering the area eventually have to turn around or return toward the main park circulation routes, limiting how naturally the space can function as a major destination.
2. Hemmed In by Existing Structures
Pixar Plaza is closely surrounded by existing guest facilities and park structures. Nearby are Walt Disney Presents and the facilities of the new Magic of Disney Animation, including the Studio Theater, where The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure is presented.
These are active, operational guest spaces that cannot simply be removed or trimmed back without a much larger redevelopment project.
The situation became even more interesting in 2026, when Disney substantially reimagined Animation Courtyard. The area now includes The Magic of Disney Animation, while Disney Jr., Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Live! occupies the space formerly associated with Disney Junior Play and Dance! The Little Mermaid – A Musical Adventure also remains part of the area.
Rather than being an untouched corner of the park, Animation Courtyard is therefore already in the middle of another stage of its evolution.
3. Backstage Infrastructure Considerations
Behind the themed walls lies the operational infrastructure that supports the surrounding park. Any major expansion of Pixar Plaza would have to account for backstage access, utilities, cast member circulation, and other operational requirements.
That doesn’t mean Disney could never redevelop the area. It does mean that a major expansion would likely require more than simply dropping a new attraction into the existing corridor.
Because the corridor is relatively narrow and constrained by surrounding structures, building a substantial modern attraction would likely require significant reconfiguration of the surrounding area.
What Should Disney Do With Hollywood Studios’ Hardest Puzzle?
Disney finds itself at a crossroads with Pixar Plaza. Leaving it as a relatively quiet pocket of the park can make it feel disproportionate to the increasingly immersive environments surrounding it. Yet spending a substantial amount of money to re-engineer the surrounding infrastructure in a relatively small area would require Disney to weigh the project’s costs and benefits carefully.
The most logical solution may lie in a broader long-term plan for the eastern side of Hollywood Studios. Disney has already demonstrated its willingness to rework Animation Courtyard, and future redevelopment could eventually provide an opportunity to rethink how Pixar Plaza connects with the surrounding areas.
If Imagineers eventually decide to undertake another major redevelopment of the Animation Courtyard footprint, they could potentially absorb Pixar Plaza into a larger expansion area. By reconfiguring the dividing walls and circulation routes, Disney could eliminate the dead-end experience and potentially create a more seamless pathway connecting Hollywood Boulevard with Toy Story Land.
Until Disney commits to a larger overhaul of this part of the park, Pixar Plaza will remain Hollywood Studios’ most awkward paradox: a spot near the heart of the park that no longer serves the major-attraction function it once did and remains constrained by the surrounding layout.
For a park that has spent the last decade reinventing itself, Pixar Plaza is a reminder that not every piece of the old Hollywood Studios has found a new starring role.
