Disney World Abandons Guest Boarding Policies Following Surprise Failure at Park
Alien Swirling Saucers has reversed a loading change that lasted only about two months at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The Toy Story Land attraction is no longer directing each party to a specific numbered rocket, restoring the choose-your-own-vehicle boarding style guests knew before July.
The practical difference is small on paper but obvious on the platform. Families can once again pick among the available rockets when Cast Members release them to board, rather than walking to a vehicle matched to an assigned number. For guests with children eyeing a particular color or Alien, that also brings back the possibility of multiple parties heading for the same vehicle.
Alien Swirling Saucers Drops Its Assigned-Rocket System
The numbered system arrived in July 2026. Parties waited on numbered star markers and were then directed to rockets carrying matching numbers, replacing the attraction’s previous open-choice approach.
Inside the Magic reported on the July change when Disney ended guests’ ability to choose their own rocket. At the time, the procedure created a more defined path from the holding area to the ride vehicle: receive a number, wait at the corresponding marker, then board the matching rocket.
That vehicle-assignment piece has now been removed. The numbered stars remain in the holding area, where Cast Members can still position parties before boarding, but the numbers are no longer being used to send each group to a correspondingly numbered rocket. The identifying numbers have also been removed from the ride vehicles.
Disney’s official attraction page does not detail boarding assignments or this operational change. It continues to list Alien Swirling Saucers as a Toy Story Land attraction for guests 32 inches or taller, describing it as a spinning ride with the Toy Story Aliens.
The ‘Free-for-All’ Boarding Style Is Back
For families, the biggest consequence happens in the few seconds after the platform opens.
Assigned rockets eliminated one decision from the boarding process. Guests knew where they were going before stepping onto the platform. Without vehicle assignments, parties can again choose an available rocket, which can mean several groups moving toward preferred colors or characters at once.
Calling that a “stampede” is an editorial description, not Disney terminology, and there is no verified evidence that the returning procedure has caused widespread safety problems. Still, the setup can feel more competitive than assigned boarding, particularly for parents keeping a group together while other parties make their own vehicle choices.
That tradeoff is straightforward: the old-new system restores guest choice, but the numbered system offered more certainty. Anyone riding with young children may want to set expectations before the gates open: a favorite rocket may not be available by the time their party reaches it.
Disney Is Already Changing Alien Swirling Saucers Again
The loading reversal lands just before a much more visible update to the attraction.
Disney announced that Lilypad from Toy Story 5 will join Alien Swirling Saucers beginning September 25. The character will serve as a DJ for “Lilypad’s Jams,” an all-new soundtrack featuring reworked Toy Story music and original songs created for the attraction.
Disney says Imagineers recorded the soundtrack with musicians in Nashville, moving across styles including pop, country, EDM, and alt-rock. Lilypad will also provide entertainment that can be experienced off the ride, including track introductions, puzzles, drawings, and “home videos” featuring Toy Story characters.
The physical Lilypad installation has already appeared outside the attraction ahead of the September 25 debut. That makes the loading adjustment one of several changes guests may notice around this corner of Toy Story Land within a short period.
Toy Story Land Is in a Period of Smaller-Scale Updates
Alien Swirling Saucers opened with Toy Story Land in 2018 alongside Slinky Dog Dash, while Toy Story Mania! predates the land. Disney’s current Toy Story Land page still presents all three as the area’s core attractions.
The company has recently been weaving Toy Story 5 more directly into the land. Inside the Magic previously covered new Toy Story 5 character looks for Woody, Buzz Lightyear, and Jessie, as well as promotional additions tied to the film. Lilypad’s arrival extends that strategy from character presentation and visuals into an operating attraction.
That context matters because the loading change itself is not a retheme or a new ride experience. It is an operational rollback occurring while Disney makes a separate, officially announced entertainment update to the same attraction.
Alien Swirling Saucers also remains listed among the eligible Lightning Lane Multi Pass experiences at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Disney notes that Lightning Lane offerings are subject to availability and change.
What Guests Should Watch at Hollywood Studios
For now, guests should expect a familiar boarding routine: Cast Members may organize parties on numbered floor markers, but those numbers no longer lock each group to a particular rocket. Once boarding begins, vehicle choice is again part of the experience.
What Disney has not publicly explained is why the matching vehicle assignments were discontinued after roughly two months, whether the procedure is gone permanently, or whether another loading adjustment could follow. Without an official explanation, attributing the reversal to capacity, guest satisfaction, staffing, or the coming Lilypad update would be speculation.
The next confirmed milestone is September 25, when Disney says Lilypad’s Jams begins at Alien Swirling Saucers. Between a restored choose-your-own-rocket boarding process and a new soundtrack arriving days later, repeat visitors may find Alien Swirling Saucers operating a little more like its old self while sounding noticeably different.
