The Lost Continent debuted with Islands of Adventure in 1999. Now, demolition is transforming the opening-day land as Universal prepares the area for whatever comes next.
Universal’s silence has left fans searching for clues, especially as rumors surrounding The Legend of Zelda continue to follow the project.
Now, Nintendo just gave those rumors another reason to heat up.
With Universal clearing space at Islands of Adventure and Nintendo delivering a major Zelda update, could Universal be preparing for an announcement of its own?
Nintendo Just Pulled Back the Curtain
Nintendo has shared new details about its live-action The Legend of Zelda movie, including what fans should expect from its story.
During a Nintendo Direct dedicated to The Legend of Zelda, Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that the movie’s official title will simply be The Legend of Zelda.
Nintendo also revealed that the story won’t directly adapt one particular game. Instead, the movie will draw on stories and concepts from throughout the franchise.
That gives the filmmakers the freedom to create a version of Hyrule specifically for the big screen rather than recreating a single game.
And that approach becomes particularly interesting when looking at what is happening at Universal Orlando Resort.
The Timing Is Raising a Big Question
The Lost Continent has been connected to Zelda rumors for years, but those rumors become more interesting now that Universal is actively demolishing the land.
Universal began closing portions of The Lost Continent in phases as demolition moved forward across the land.
What Universal hasn’t done is announce its replacement.
If The Legend of Zelda really is involved, Nintendo’s movie plans could potentially help explain the silence.
Universal could be waiting for Nintendo to establish the next major era of Zelda before revealing a theme park project connected to the franchise.
Of course, Universal has not announced that Zelda will replace The Lost Continent. There is also no confirmation that the movie update and Universal’s demolition project are connected.
Still, the timing makes the long-running rumor more interesting.
Nintendo is preparing Zelda for a much larger mainstream spotlight, while Universal has a major redevelopment site sitting inside a theme park built around adventure.
Zelda Would Make Plenty of Sense Here
If Universal wants another Nintendo property at Universal Orlando Resort, The Legend of Zelda would make sense.
SUPER NINTENDO WORLD already has a major presence at Epic Universe, which opened in May 2025. The land brought Mario, Luigi, Donkey Kong, and other Nintendo characters to Universal Orlando in a major way.
There is no reason the partnership necessarily has to remain within Epic Universe.
Islands of Adventure could also be an ideal home for Zelda.
The park centers around transporting guests into different worlds of adventure. A Zelda land filled with Hyrule locations, fantasy creatures, temples, forests, and villages could naturally fit that identity.
The Lost Continent also leaned heavily into fantasy, making Zelda a logical thematic successor even if Universal completely rebuilds the area.
For Nintendo fans, it would also create another reason to visit Universal Orlando beyond SUPER NINTENDO WORLD at Epic Universe.
But Zelda Isn’t the Only Name Being Discussed
There are other possibilities.
Pokémon has repeatedly surfaced in speculation surrounding Universal’s future theme park development. Considering the franchise’s enormous popularity and Universal’s relationship with Nintendo, Pokémon remains an intriguing possibility somewhere in Orlando.
The Lord of the Rings has also frequently appeared in Universal expansion rumors.
A Middle-earth land would fit Islands of Adventure’s identity and give Universal another massive fantasy franchise capable of supporting attractions, restaurants, shops, and immersive environments.
For now, however, Universal isn’t talking.
Zelda, Pokémon, and The Lord of the Rings all remain rumors until Universal officially reveals what will replace The Lost Continent.
Universal’s Next Reveal Could Be Massive
The Lost Continent survived at Islands of Adventure for more than a quarter-century. Now, Universal is demolishing the opening-day land while fans wait to discover what will rise in its place.
At the same time, Nintendo has delivered a major update for The Legend of Zelda, revealing more about the live-action movie and its approach to the franchise.
That doesn’t confirm Zelda is coming to Islands of Adventure.
But the timing is hard to overlook.
Nintendo is pushing Zelda toward a new era just as Universal clears the way for another major Orlando transformation. If Universal has been waiting for the right moment to reveal a Zelda project, that moment could finally be getting closer.
Until Universal makes its announcement, nothing is guaranteed. But after years of rumors, demolition, and fresh Zelda news arriving at nearly the same time, it gives fans plenty of reasons to keep watching Islands of Adventure.
