Signage goes up. Landscaping appears seemingly overnight. Then, at some point in the final stretch, cast members start walking inside. That last step is the one that matters, because cast member previews are not a marketing beat. They are an operational necessity. Before an attraction can handle thousands of guests a day, the people running it need to actually run it.
Which is why the news out of Disney’s Hollywood Studios this week is a bigger deal than it might sound.
Cast member previews for The Magic of Disney Animation have begun.
The attraction officially opens September 14, which is nine days out. Cast members have been spotted entering the newly reimagined experience inside the Walt Disney Studios Lot, and that is one of the clearest signals yet that Disney is genuinely in the final phase of this project.
Here is where things stand.
What Is Actually Happening
Cast members are now entering The Magic of Disney Animation ahead of the September 14 opening.
Construction walls have already come down around the area, and Disney Imagineering has been steadily adding finishing details throughout the courtyard for months.
What is not clear is the scope. Disney has not indicated which cast members are eligible for these previews or how long the preview period will run.
Both of those details tend to stay internal, so the absence of information is normal rather than notable.
Why Cast Member Previews Matter
This is the part worth understanding if you are trying to read the tea leaves.
Cast previews serve a practical function. Cast members need to learn the flow of an attraction before guests arrive. That means walking the queue, working the load points, testing timing, running the show, and identifying the problems that only surface when real people move through a space.
For The Magic of Disney Animation specifically, that is more complicated than a standard ride.
This is not one attraction. It is four distinct experiences under a single roof, each with different operational demands.
Olaf Draws is a class with a set duration and a new Audio-Animatronic. Off the Page involves characters meeting locations spread across six themed departments. Drawn to Wonderland is a play area, which means supervision and crowd management rather than a queue. The Once Upon A Studio Theater is a show with a run time and a seating cycle.
Coordinating all four so guests can move between them without bottlenecking is exactly the kind of thing cast previews exist to test.
Will There Be a Public Soft Opening?
This is the question every local and every guest with a trip in the next week is asking.
Disney has not announced whether guests could see a public soft opening before September 14.
Historically, cast previews often precede soft openings, but not always, and Disney does not commit to them in advance. Soft openings are typically unannounced, appear with little warning, and can end just as quickly.
What can be said is that cast previews generally mean an attraction is close to ready. Whether Disney chooses to open the doors early is a separate decision, and one the company tends to make based on how the previews go.
If you happen to be at Hollywood Studios in the next several days, it is worth checking the Walt Disney Studios Lot rather than assuming nothing will be open.
How This Space Came Together
The Magic of Disney Animation is part of the larger transformation of the former Animation Courtyard into the Walt Disney Studios Lot.
The original Animation Courtyard closed in September 2025. The reimagined courtyard reopened to guests in May 2026, while work continued inside the attraction.
That gap is unusual and worth noting. Guests have had access to the courtyard for roughly three and a half months while the main attraction has remained behind the walls, which is why the statue additions and finishing touches out there have been trickling out publicly over the summer.
The Roy E. Disney Animation Building is the piece that has been holding the attraction, and September 14 is when it will finally open.
What Is Inside
Disney has previewed several of the experiences coming to the space.
Drawn to Wonderland is an indoor play area built for the youngest guests, inspired by Mary Blair’s original concept art for Alice in Wonderland.
Off the Page is a set of character greetings organized into six departments within the animation studio: Story, Layout, Hand-Drawn Animation, Computer Animation, Lighting, and Effects.
Olaf Draws is an animation class where guests learn to draw Disney characters, featuring a brand-new Olaf Audio-Animatronic with original dialogue recorded by Josh Gad.
The Once Upon A Studio Theater presents the Emmy Award-winning short film, which is the entire attraction built around, with enhanced effects that place guests inside the story.
What Happens Between Now and September 14
Realistically, more of the same.
Expect continued finishing touches in the courtyard, potential additional character statues, and a preview period that runs until Disney is satisfied.
The thing to watch is whether a soft opening materializes. If it does, it will likely be brief, unannounced, and extremely crowded within about twenty minutes of word getting out.
Either way, the wait is nearly over. After nearly a year of walls, the last major Hollywood Studios opening of 2026 is nine days away.
