Disney’s Beach Club just added lobby work on top of exterior maintenance that will run through 2027. The BoardWalk has been rebuilding its entertainment district after losing several venues. Yachtsman Steakhouse came back from a fifteen-week closure at the Yacht Club. Crescent Lake and the monorail loop have both had sustained activity. Checking for refurbishment notices has quietly become part of trip planning.
Now Disney has posted an official notice for one of the most distinctive resorts on property, and this one comes with a long timeline.
Disney’s Art of Animation Resort will undergo a room refurbishment from mid-June 2027 through October 2028.
That is roughly 16 months, which is a substantial commitment for a Value Resort. And it raises a question a lot of fans are already asking, because Art of Animation is not a resort you want anyone touching carelessly.
Why This One Feels Different
Art of Animation is one of the last Walt Disney World resorts that fully commits to a theme.
Disney has spent the past several years modernizing hotel rooms across property, replacing heavily themed interiors with cleaner, more neutral designs. Muted palettes. Simple lines. A framed character silhouette where a mural once stood. The results look fine, and they also look like a Marriott with Mickey on the wall.
Art of Animation is the opposite of that instinct. Giant sculpted set pieces. Courtyards built to look like you walked into the movie. Suites where the theming does not stop at the door. It is loud, specific, and a huge part of why families book it repeatedly.
So a room refurbishment here carries a different weight than it would elsewhere. The hope is that this refreshes the rooms without sanding down the whimsy that makes the resort worth staying at.
What Disney Has Confirmed
The official notice sets exact dates for a refresh Disney first announced earlier this year.
The refurbishment runs from mid-June 2027 through October 2028, moving through the resort one themed area at a time. Guests may see or hear maintenance work in the active area during daytime hours.
The resort is expected to remain open throughout the project.
Working one area at a time is the key detail. Art of Animation is built around four distinct sections:
- Finding Nemo family suites
- Cars family suites
- The Lion King family suites
- The Little Mermaid standard rooms
Three family suite wings and one standard room wing. Handling them in sequence lets Disney keep the rest of the resort open and bookable while crews work through each section.
Disney’s notice does not specify which themed area goes first, nor does it break the 16-month window into individual phase dates.
What the Work Involves
Disney will perform what it calls a hard goods refresh.
In practical terms, that means all-new furniture and fixtures rather than a cosmetic touch-up. This is the resort’s first major hard goods room overhaul since it opened in 2012, so the timing is not unreasonable. Fourteen years is a long run for furniture in rooms that see constant family traffic.
Walt Disney World showed a piece of concept art to the media earlier this year, but Disney has not released concept art publicly.
That absence is worth noting. Concept art is usually how Disney manages expectations for a project like this, and holding it back means fans are working with a timeline and no visual. For a resort where theming is the entire selling point, that gap will fuel speculation until something is released.
The Broader Pattern
This project is part of a larger strategy Disney executives outlined in May 2026 during a media briefing on Walt Disney World’s classic attraction reinvestment approach.
That briefing is where Art of Animation was first identified as beginning a room and suite refresh in summer 2027, and the newly posted notice confirms that timeline with specific dates.
The phased approach also aligns with how Disney has staged recent Value Resort projects elsewhere on the property, suggesting this is a repeatable playbook rather than a one-off.
What Guests Should Know
If you have a trip planned between mid-June 2027 and October 2028, a few practical points.
The resort stays open, so this is not a closure. But you may be booked in or near an active work area, and Disney’s notice specifically says guests may see or hear maintenance during daytime hours.
Because Disney has not published phase dates, there is currently no way to know which wing will be under construction during a given week. Anyone with strong feelings about staying in a specific themed area may want to wait for more details before booking far out.
Everything else at the resort should remain available. That includes the largest resort pool at Walt Disney World, Landscape of Flavors with its five food shops serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner, dog-friendly accommodations, and the Disney Skyliner station connecting to EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
What to Watch For
The real story here is not the timeline. It is what the rooms look like when they reopen.
Art of Animation works because it goes all in. The rooms, the suites, the courtyards, the pool, all of it pulls in the same direction. A hard goods refresh is genuinely needed after fourteen years, and new furniture in a family suite that has hosted thousands of kids is not a bad thing.
The question is whether Disney treats this as an opportunity to update the theming or an opportunity to simplify it.
