Seuss Landing Overhauled as Major Controversy Strikes Universal Park
References to McElligot’s Pool have been removed from a water feature at the entrance to Seuss Landing inside Universal Islands of Adventure at Universal Orlando Resort. A guest report also says the accompanying audio reference is gone, further separating the land from one of six Dr. Seuss books withdrawn from publication and licensing in 2021.
The alteration is small, but its context is larger. Five years ago, Universal said it was “evaluating” its in-park Dr. Seuss experiences after Dr. Seuss Enterprises discontinued several titles, and the latest Seuss Landing change shows that individual pieces of the land can still be edited years later.
Universal Removes a McElligot’s Pool Reference From Seuss Landing
The reported change was documented by X user GreenCheetah99, whose images show the water feature near Seuss Landing’s entrance without its former McElligot’s Pool identification. According to the same guest report, the audio that referenced the title has also been removed.
For guests, the immediate impact appears limited: Universal has not announced the closure of Seuss Landing or a major attraction in connection with the alteration. The resort’s current official Islands of Adventure information continues to list Seuss Landing as one of the park’s eight lands, while Universal’s interactive map still identifies attractions including Caro-Seuss-el, One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish, If I Ran the Zoo, and The High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride.
That distinction matters. This is a targeted thematic edit, not evidence that Universal has ordered a total redesign of Seuss Landing.
Why McElligot’s Pool Became a Problematic Theme-Park Reference
Dr. Seuss Enterprises announced on March 2, 2021, that it would cease publication and licensing of six books: And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street, If I Ran the Zoo, McElligot’s Pool, On Beyond Zebra!, Scrambled Eggs Super!, and The Cat’s Quizzer.
The company said it had reviewed its catalog with a panel that included educators and concluded the books “portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong.” McElligot’s Pool, first published in 1947, includes an “Eskimo fish” depiction associated with an outdated ethnic stereotype. Contemporary Associated Press reporting described the six books as containing racist and insensitive imagery.
The decision did not erase Dr. Seuss from Universal Orlando. Instead, it complicated a land built from many Seuss stories and characters.
Universal Said It Was Evaluating Its Dr. Seuss Experiences in 2021
The latest removal has a direct precedent. When the six titles were withdrawn in 2021, Universal Orlando told a reporter that Seuss Landing remained popular and that the resort valued its relationship with Dr. Seuss Enterprises. Universal also said it had removed the affected books from store shelves and would evaluate its “in-park experience.”
Inside the Magic reported on Universal’s 2021 response at the time. Seuss Landing contained direct references to discontinued titles, including McElligot’s Pool and the still-operating If I Ran the Zoo play area.
That history makes the newly reported edit more significant than ordinary paint or maintenance. It connects a current physical change to a review Universal publicly acknowledged five years ago, even though the company has not announced a comprehensive retheming plan.
Seuss Landing Is Still Operating—and Still Changing
Seuss Landing remains an active part of Islands of Adventure. Universal’s official park information continues to promote the land, and its 2026 Grinchmas page identifies Seuss Landing as the location of the seasonal celebration.
The land has also seen other changes that are unrelated to the McElligot’s Pool issue. Inside the Magic recently covered changes to Seuss Landing, while One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish underwent a brief 2026 refurbishment. Earlier, the All the Books You Can Read bookstore was reported closed.
Elsewhere in Islands of Adventure, construction has also changed portions of the park’s entrance area. Together, those projects show an older theme park continuing to evolve, but they should not be conflated with the specific reason for removing a discontinued-book reference.
What Could Universal Change Next?
The obvious question is whether McElligot’s Pool is an isolated cleanup or one step in a longer process. One especially visible complication remains: Universal’s current interactive map still lists If I Ran the Zoo, an attraction whose name comes from another of the six books Dr. Seuss Enterprises stopped publishing and licensing in 2021.
There is no verified announcement that If I Ran the Zoo will close, be renamed, or be rethemed. There is likewise no official evidence that Universal plans to remove Seuss Landing, replace the land, or conduct a sweeping redesign because of the discontinued books.
For now, the defensible takeaway is narrower. A McElligot’s Pool reference has disappeared from a Seuss Landing water feature, and a guest report says its audio reference is gone as well. Against Universal’s documented 2021 promise to evaluate its in-park experiences, however, even a small edit is worth watching. The next test will be whether other references to the six withdrawn titles remain untouched—or quietly become the next details to change.
