For years, the ideological cold war between The Walt Disney Company and conservative America has been a defining narrative in the media landscape. From intense legislative battles in Florida to continuous accusations of pushing a liberal agenda, Disney has frequently found itself directly in the crosshairs of right-leaning critics. However, if you are looking for definitive proof that the era of political posturing at Disney is over, look no further than this week’s stunning turn of events.

According to recent industry reports, President Donald Trump and Disney’s new leadership have officially kissed and made up. In a shocking pivot for the House of Mouse, newly minted Disney CEO Josh D’Amaro recently spent time with the President, standing side by side with him and signaling an end to years of corporate animosity.

The Freedom 250 Patriot Games Truce

The setting for this monumental reconciliation was President Donald Trump’s inaugural Freedom 250 Patriot Games, held on Tuesday. The event, a national competition for high school athletes, served as the ultimate olive branch between Mar-a-Lago and the Magic Kingdom.

The reconciliation was highly visible. Pat McAfee, one of ESPN’s biggest and most highly paid stars, personally greeted Trump on the tarmac in Cleveland. From there, McAfee and Trump apparently traveled together aboard Marine One to the event’s location at nearby Spire Academy.

But it wasn’t just sports television personalities making nice with the Commander-in-Chief. Disney chief executive officer Josh D’Amaro and ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro both joined McAfee and Trump at the athletic competition. Solidifying the corporate partnership, the event was officially streamed on the ESPN app. D’Amaro was even photographed standing side by side with Trump’s Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt—an image that would have been virtually unthinkable under the company’s previous leadership.

A Rocky History of Bad Blood

To truly understand how shocking this reunion is, one has to examine the bitter past issues between Donald Trump and Disney.

The relationship between Trump and the entertainment giant has been fraught for years. Former Disney CEO Bob Iger famously resigned from Trump’s presidential advisory council in 2017, setting the stage for years of friction. During Trump’s tenure, conservative critics heavily scrutinized Disney’s theme parks, movies, and sports networks for allegedly pushing a “woke” agenda. Trump himself frequently attacked ESPN on social media, previously tweeting that the network was “paying a really big price for its politics” and demanding that they “Apologize for untruth!”

The feud carried well into 2026. After Josh D’Amaro took the helm as Disney’s chief executive in March 2026, he was immediately thrust into a political firestorm. In April 2026, D’Amaro faced his first major test when President Trump publicly pressured Disney to fire ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel over a joke. First Lady Melania Trump and a host of conservative allies joined the chorus, creating a massive headache for the new CEO.

Despite this turbulent history and the calls for Kimmel’s dismissal just months prior, D’Amaro’s recent appearance with Trump suggests that the two sides have successfully buried the hatchet.

Erasing the “Woke” Label at ESPN

By attending the Patriot Games, D’Amaro and Pitaro are sending a clear, undeniable message to the public: Disney is abandoning the culture wars.

Critics can no longer easily claim that ESPN is “woke,” especially given its massive embrace of figures like Pat McAfee. McAfee has developed a highly publicized bromance with Trump, who personally invited the sports host to join him at Tuesday’s event. Earlier this year, McAfee took his eponymous show on the road to the White House lawn, and he notably hosted Trump on his program on Veterans Day.

This relationship aligns perfectly with ESPN’s broader strategic shift. Over the past eight years, Jimmy Pitaro has made it explicitly clear that he wants the network to avoid the third rail of politics. This approach directly counters the strategy of the previous ESPN president, John Skipper, a liberal Southerner whose era was marked by outspoken on-air talent.

To achieve this apolitical stance, ESPN has systematically purged many liberal voices over the last decade. This exodus has removed the ammunition that conservative critics, such as OutKick’s Clay Travis, once used to attack the network.

  • Jemele Hill took a buyout and left ESPN in 2018 after her 6 p.m. SportsCenter show was canceled.
  • The left-leaning Dan Le Batard parted ways with the network in 2021.
  • Bomani Jones and Pablo Torre saw their show, High Noon, canceled in 2020, and both were gone from ESPN entirely by 2023.
  • Most recently, Ryan Clark was pink-slipped while still on the air.

In their place, ESPN has elevated talent who appeal to broader or more conservative audiences. Alongside McAfee, Stephen A. Smith has become the face of the network. While Smith has flirted with the idea of a Democratic presidential run in 2028, he is not a traditional liberal. He maintains friendships with Fox News personalities like Sean Hannity and Will Cain, has toured with conservative stalwart Bill O’Reilly, and recently took a strong stance arguing that biological males should not compete in women’s sports.

The Business of Playing the Middle

At the end of the day, Disney and ESPN’s decision to make peace with Donald Trump comes down to raw mathematics.

With cord-cutting drastically reducing television’s reach, Disney simply cannot afford to alienate half of its potential viewership. Trump has won two U.S. presidential elections, proving that his base represents a massive, undeniable segment of the American consumer market. As Pitaro previously stated in 2019, internal data clearly shows that fans do not want ESPN to cover politics.

Of course, this pivot is not without its detractors. Some critics have mockingly dubbed Pat McAfee as “MAGA-fee,” claiming that despite his apolitical stance, everything he does leans to the right. Similarly, some viewers now view Disney and ESPN executives as “spineless bootlickers for seemingly kissing Trump’s ring.”

Yet, Disney management seems willing to absorb these criticisms to protect the bottom line. The network has realized that it cannot win the culture wars, so it must stake out a middle ground. Moving forward, industry insiders will be watching closely to see how Disney handles its remaining liberal lightning rods. Specifically, all eyes are on Jimmy Kimmel, whose contract expires in 2027, to see if D’Amaro’s new alliance with Trump impacts the late-night host’s future at ABC.

Conclusion

Josh D’Amaro’s appearance with Donald Trump at the Patriot Games represents a seismic shift for The Walt Disney Company. By streaming the President’s event on the ESPN app and standing shoulder to shoulder with him, D’Amaro has effectively ended the cold war between Disney and Trump. While sports and politics will always remain inextricably linked, Disney has made its choice: it is prioritizing business, shedding its “woke” label, and leaving the culture wars behind.
