SeaWorld San Diego Abruptly Shuts Down Entire Theme Park

A routine summer afternoon at SeaWorld came to an abrupt halt.

SeaWorld San Diego is part marine-life park and part thrill destination, pairing orca and dolphin presentations with roller coasters including Emperor, Electric Eel, Manta, and Arctic Rescue. Its extended summer calendar also keeps guests inside the Mission Bay park well into the evening.

The 2026 season has included the new Ocean of Dreams nighttime spectacular, which uses 600 illuminated drones above Mission Bay. The 12-minute production was scheduled to run nightly through August 9 as part of SeaWorld’s wider Summer Spectacular program.

That packed schedule was suddenly cut short on Friday, July 31, when a power outage forced SeaWorld San Diego to close for the remainder of the day. Although the park initially said only a portion of the property was affected, operations across the park quickly unraveled.

Power Failure Brings SeaWorld to a Stop

The outage began shortly after noon on Friday, according to San Diego Gas & Electric. Its outage map showed that nearly two dozen customers were affected, with SeaWorld San Diego among them.

SeaWorld spokesperson Tracy Spahr said the company was working with SDG&E to restore service as quickly as possible.

“All animal care and life support systems remain fully operational. The safety and well-being of our guests, ambassadors, and animals remain our highest priority,” SeaWorld said.

The company stressed that animal welfare was not affected. Its animal-care and life-support systems continued operating despite the wider disruption to guest areas.

The San Diego Fire Department also responded after smoke was reported coming from a building west of the park. Firefighters found no active fire but confirmed that an electrical issue was present.

SDG&E said the problem involved SeaWorld equipment. The exact cause remained unknown and under investigation on Friday afternoon.

For guests already inside, the shutdown brought shows and basic services to an unexpected stop.

“We were at the orca show, and they just didn’t do the show,” said Paul Addicott, who was visiting from London with his family.

Addicott said the presentation’s screen went down. His family then attempted to use the restrooms but was told to leave because there was no power.

Another visitor, Maria Rodriguez, said she had placed a mobile food order shortly before the outage but was unable to collect it. After receiving little information from employees, her family left the park because they were hungry.

SeaWorld Offers Refunds After Sudden Closure

SDG&E initially estimated that power would be restored by 10 p.m. However, SeaWorld did not wait for service to return before ending operations for the day.

The park confirmed that guests affected by the closure could either use their ticket to return on another day or request a refund. That offer applied to visitors who had purchased admission for Friday.

The disruption landed during one of SeaWorld San Diego’s busiest seasonal periods. Summer Spectacular runs on select dates through September 7, while Ocean of Dreams was scheduled nightly through August 9 before moving to weekends.

The July 31 closure eliminated the remainder of the park’s daytime operations and its evening entertainment, including scheduled nighttime animal experiences and the drone spectacular.

SeaWorld’s official website continued to list its summer events after the incident. Guests planning an immediate visit should check the park’s operating calendar and app for current hours, attraction availability, and showtimes.

It remained unclear whether anyone had been stranded on a ride during the outage. No injuries were confirmed in the initial reports. SeaWorld reopened at 11 a.m. today.
