On July 5, severe thunderstorms hit the Walt Disney World Resort area, shutting down outdoor attractions across Magic Kingdom Park, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Several indoor attractions also closed due to a power outage that appeared to be caused by the storms.

A new video from Instagram user @kenyabarisone shows the moment lightning struck a building in Fantasyland at the Magic Kingdom during those devastating storms. The Central Florida Disney Park guest was already recording the downpour as her party sheltered in an alcove near the Storybook Circus area when a large cracking sound made everyone jolt:

“That hit the building,” one Disney Park guest said following the loud noise.

Fortunately, Walt Disney World Resort has installed lightning rods on tall buildings and at-risk structures across Magic Kingdom Park, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Although the noise from the lightning strike was definitely terrifying for Disney Park guests, it was a sign that the resort’s safety systems were working as intended.

No injuries were reported following the lightning strike at Magic Kingdom Park on July 5, and there appears to be no long-term damage to any buildings or attractions at the original Central Florida Disney park. At the time of this report, operations at all four Walt Disney World Resort theme parks had returned to normal following the severe thunderstorms.
