Disney was forced to temporarily close one of its most classic attractions yesterday due to an incident involving human remains.

With Disney’s theme parks providing the backdrop for countless family holidays, milestones, and childhood memories, some people see them as deeply personal places. For grieving relatives, scattering ashes at the Happiest Place on Earth can feel like a final way to keep a loved one close to somewhere they cherished.

However, Disney does not permit guests to do so – and it can (and will) remove ashes it spots on property.

That was the case yesterday when a guest decided to dump ashes on one of Disneyland’s most nostalgic attractions.

Guest Dumps Ashes on Disneyland Ride

According to a guest on Reddit, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride was temporarily closed yesterday so cast members could deal with an incident aboard the attraction.

The guest was waiting to ride the Fantasyland staple when a custodial cast member approached with a vacuum and closed the doors to the attraction’s boarding area.

“A tagged car came by with visible ashes in the bottom and the worker loading let us know that someone had just dumped ashes on the ride and that they were cycling us out so that they could vacuum them up,” they said.

With guests “cycled” out of the attraction, Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride was presumably closed for as long as required to fully remove the remains.

“I’ve heard of this happening, but have never seen it myself,” the guest wrote. “It was just crazy to actually see the ashes and see them along the floor of the ride as we went and on the edge of the fountain as you exit the bar scene.”

This is far from the first time guests have witnessed such a thing at Disney, where the phenomenon has earned the nickname “Code Grandma.” A former Haunted Mansion cast member previously wrote on Reddit, “I was a Mansion maid for around a year and it would happen at least once a month, probably around ~2 weeks is the amount it was realistically.”

They added that it’s ultimately frustrating for cast members and guests alike.

“People get so frustrated when attractions go down anyway, and then to have people screaming at you about it and knowing it’s bc of a guest who did something explicitly against the rules… please don’t do it guys,” they wrote. “You’re making CM’s jobs harder and your loved one is going into a vacuum and then dumped out. They’ll spend very little time on the ride path itself.”

Back in 2024, Whoopi Goldberg admitted to scattering her mother’s ashes on “it’s a small world” several years earlier.
