Marvel Studios may be preparing one of the biggest character shake-ups the Marvel Cinematic Universe has seen in years. As anticipation builds for the next major MCU release, fans are beginning to realize that one original Avenger could be heading toward a dramatic transformation or be replaced altogether.

For more than a decade, Bruce Banner’s Hulk has undergone constant changes in the MCU. The once-unstoppable monster slowly evolved into the calmer and far more controlled “Smart Hulk” audiences have seen in recent years. While Marvel leaned heavily into that version of the character after Avengers: Endgame (2019), not every fan embraced the direction.

New details suggest Marvel’s upcoming plans may see the studio abandon that era completely. If the latest rumors are accurate, the Hulk’s return to theaters may look nothing like the version MCU audiences have grown used to.

Hulk’s MCU Evolution

Bruce Banner has had one of the most unusual journeys in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The character first appeared in The Incredible Hulk (2008), where Edward Norton portrayed Banner as a hunted scientist terrified of losing control of the monster inside him.

That version of Hulk felt dangerous. He was unpredictable, destructive, and constantly at war with Banner himself.

Marvel later recast the role, bringing in Mark Ruffalo beginning with The Avengers (2012). Ruffalo quickly became the definitive MCU version of Bruce Banner, appearing in films like Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015), Thor: Ragnarok (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), and Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Over time, Marvel gradually transformed Hulk from a chaotic force into Smart Hulk, a version that combined Banner’s intelligence with Hulk’s body and strength. While some fans enjoyed the evolution, others felt the MCU lost the classic Hulk personality that made the character so popular in the first place.

The Last Time We Saw Hulk

The most recent Hulk appearance came in the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law (2022). Bruce Banner spent much of the series helping Jennifer Walters learn how to manage her new powers while remaining firmly in his Smart Hulk form.

By that point, Banner seemed completely comfortable with his identity. Hulk no longer felt like a curse or uncontrollable monster.

Still, Marvel quietly planted seeds for future stories.

Near the end of the series, Bruce traveled back to Sakaar before eventually returning with his son, Skaar, during the finale. At the time, many fans assumed Marvel was setting up future Hulk-related projects deeper into the MCU’s future.

Instead, it now appears Marvel could be preparing a major Hulk reset much sooner.

Marvel’s New Hulk Direction

Marvel is reportedly bringing Hulk back in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026), which releases in theaters on July 31, 2026.

Mark Ruffalo’s involvement became harder to deny after promotional artwork connected to the film briefly surfaced online before quickly disappearing. The artwork reportedly featured Tom Holland’s Spider-Man alongside villains like Scorpion, Boomerang, and Tarantula.

Now, new Hasbro merchandise may have revealed Marvel’s biggest Hulk clue yet.

The toy packaging reportedly refers to Ruffalo’s character as “Savage Smash Hulk,” immediately sparking theories that Marvel is abandoning the Smart Hulk era altogether.

That wording feels intentional.

For years, Marvel avoided fully embracing Hulk’s savage comic-book personality after Endgame. Suddenly attaching a name centered around destruction and rage strongly suggests the studio is taking the character back to his roots.

What a Particular Reveal Suggests

The figure reportedly resembles the classic Hulk design fans have known for decades. He still wears ripped purple pants, still looks enormous, and still carries the furious expression associated with the comic-book version of the character.

What stands out most is how aggressive this Hulk appears to be.

The figure reportedly features oversized muscular arms and proportions that make him look far more intimidating than the calmer Smart Hulk audiences recently saw. The packaging also appears to use an official CGI render of Ruffalo’s Hulk in his familiar green form, despite rumors that Marvel could introduce a gray variation of the character.

Taken together, the merchandise suggests Marvel will fully restore a more dangerous version of Hulk.

How Could Marvel Explain the Change?

One major fan theory suggests the film’s villains could accidentally trigger Hulk’s return.

According to online rumors, Tombstone may use Scorpion to inject Bruce Banner with a toxin designed to stop him from helping Peter Parker with his own mutation problems. Instead of weakening Hulk, however, the toxin could unleash Banner’s long-suppressed Savage Hulk persona.

That would instantly create chaos for Spider-Man.

Peter Parker has never faced this many enemies in a live-action film before, and adding an uncontrollable Hulk to the situation could push the movie into completely new territory for the MCU.

The storyline could also set up a permanent separation between Bruce Banner and Hulk, potentially explaining why Marvel has not confirmed Mark Ruffalo for future projects like Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars.

Right now, Marvel has not officially confirmed any of these rumors. Still, between the leaked artwork, merchandise reveals, and “Savage Smash Hulk” name, it increasingly feels like Marvel Studios is preparing to bring back the Hulk fans have wanted for years.
