Walt Disney World Resort has permanently axed a Magic Kingdom tradition.
Disney permanently closed the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat in 2025 to make way for the new Cars-themed Piston Peak expansion. Construction is now visible across Frontierland, with work also set to begin on the park’s long-awaited Villains Land.

The park also introduced the new Disney Starlight nighttime parade last year, recently reopened Big Thunder Mountain Railroad following refurbishment work, and continues to reshape Frontierlandās footprint as demolition and infrastructure projects accelerate behind construction walls near Haunted Mansion and the former riverfront.
Cinderella Castle has also undergone its biggest visual transformation since the parkās 50th anniversary celebrations. Disney spent much of early 2026 repainting the icon back to a more classic color palette, replacing the controversial pink tones with softer grays, creams, blues, and gold accents inspired by the castle’s original 1971 appearance.
Disney has now confirmed that there’s a downside to this change.
Disney World Permanently Axes Morning Welcome Show
Disney has confirmed that Magic Kingdomās morning opening ceremony will no longer feature live characters once work on Cinderella Castle wraps up. The park’s “Let the Magic Begin” introduction is staying as a voiceover-only experience moving forward.
The Magic Kingdom āLet the Magic Beginā welcome show will remain audio-only moving forward. The change was introduced earlier this year during Cinderella Castle painting work. And starting Sunday, Mickeyās Magical Friendship Faire adds a morning performance at 11:10 am.

The castle stage show first arrived in 2017 after Disney retired the classic train station welcome near the entrance to Main Street, U.S.A. Mickey Mouse and several other Disney characters would appear on the Cinderella Castle stage each morning ahead of the official opening.
Live performances stopped earlier this year when refurbishment projects began around parts of Cinderella Castle. Guests initially expected the stripped-back audio version to disappear once construction work ended, but Disney has now confirmed that it will not happen.
Disney quietly removed the page for Let the Magic Begin from its official website earlier this week.

The silver lining is that Disney is slightly expanding its daytime entertainment schedule at Cinderella Castle. Beginning May 10, Mickeyās Magical Friendship Faire will add a new 11:10 a.m. performance, giving guests an earlier chance to catch the stage show featuring characters from Tangled (2010), Frozen (2013), and The Princess and the Frog (2009).
The move also aligns Magic Kingdom with the rest of Walt Disney Worldās parks. EPCOT, Disneyās Hollywood Studios, and Disneyās Animal Kingdom already rely on recorded opening announcements instead of live entertainment before guests are released for rope drop.
Operationally, very little changes for visitors arriving early. Guests will continue waiting in designated sections of the park before entering individual lands once the welcome message finishes and attractions officially begin operating for the day.
However, for longtime Disney World fans, the change marks another small piece of live park atmosphere quietly disappearing from Magic Kingdom.
