The Jurassic World series has built a reputation over the past decade for one consistent trait: divisive storytelling that often splits audiences before a film has even hit theaters.

Jurassic World Has a Story of Dividing Fans
This trend started halfway through the Jurassic World trilogy.
Fans criticized Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018) for not only closing out its island-set storyline prematurely by shifting jarringly into a gothic mansion escape film, but also for featuring yet another dinosaur hybrid in the form of the Indoraptor. Despite its mixed critical reception, the film was a global box office success, grossing $1.310 billion worldwide.
The follow-up, Jurassic World Dominion (2022), pushed the franchise into full global territory, bringing dinosaurs into human civilisation while also inexplicably introducing a genetically engineered swarm of locusts as a central plot device, with the latter coming under fire from fans and critics. While it became another box office hit at $1.004 billion worldwide, Dominion was also widely criticised for squandering the dinosaurs-gone-global concept.

Then came the most recent film, Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), directed by Gareth Edwards and starring Scarlett Johansson. Positioned as a loose reset of sorts, the film undoes the global dinosaur storyline in favor of another contained jungle survival format. Even before the film was released, the official plot synopsis from Universal divided fans, with many viewing it as a lazy return to basics and others seeing it as a creative step backwards for the franchise. Nonetheless, Rebirth grossed $869.1 million worldwide.
Now attention is turning toward what comes next for the Jurassic film series.

Jurassic World Rebirth 2 Reportedly in the Works
According to reports, a sequel tentatively referred to as Jurassic World Rebirth 2 (TBA) is expected to begin shooting this year, with a potential release window set for 2028.
Some reports also suggest that both Gareth Edwards and Scarlett Johansson are in negotiations to return, although these discussions remain unverified and Universal Pictures has not confirmed any such project as yet. If the film does move forward, though, it will likely venture into even wilder territory that continues to divide fans, audiences, and critics.
Of course, there are many directions the film could take, with some sort of mainland viral outbreak or human–dinosaur hybrids being the most likely, given the ending of the last film. But there are other avenues it should take, with Ice Age beasts like woolly mammoth and saber-toothed tiger being a long-overdue concept for the series.
Looking back at the last film, though, which introduced a mutated Tyrannosaurus rex and actual flying raptors, we wouldn’t be surprised if the next one somehow ends up in space.
As it stands, Jurassic World Rebirth 2 remains unconfirmed and the reports are unverified.
