Big Thunder Mountain Railroad just came back from a lengthy refurbishment. Today was supposed to be the celebration. It did not go as planned.

Magic Kingdom’s iconic roller coaster reopened today after months of closure, with the park rolling out a new guidemap featuring the attraction with a bold “REFRESHED!” label in purple and a lower minimum height requirement that opens the ride to more families than before. By every measure it was set up to be a triumphant return for one of Frontierland’s most beloved attractions. The kind of reopening day that generates long lines and social media posts from guests happy to see it back.

Instead, the ride closed again on its first day back.

Around 5:45 PM, a call for a fire was placed at Magic Kingdom. Scott Spillers, posting on X as @ScottSpillers, shared a photo from inside the park showing a cast member using a fire extinguisher directly on the track in the load and unload area of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Spillers captioned the post: “A little mishap this afternoon during Big Thunder Mountain’s first day of operation after the long refurb. #BigThunder #MagicKingdom #WaltDisneyWorld”

The photo shows the cast member actively deploying the extinguisher on the track, with the white discharge visible in the loading area. The ride was closed as a result. As of the time this article is being published, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad remains closed.

Disney has not issued a statement on the incident. No injuries have been reported.

What Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Just Went Through

The timing of today’s incident is particularly difficult given what the refurbishment was building toward.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has been one of Magic Kingdom’s signature attractions since it opened in 1980. It is the self-described wildest ride in the wilderness, a mine train coaster that threads through the red rock buttes of a haunted gold mine with a combination of speed, theming, and atmosphere that makes it one of the most reliably satisfying rides in the park. It is not the most intense coaster in Magic Kingdom, but it draws consistent demand from families because the experience works for a wide range of ages and because the theming is genuinely excellent at what it does.

Its extended refurbishment had been noticeable. Frontierland without Big Thunder Mountain Railroad operating felt quieter and less complete. The park’s newest guidemap, released alongside the reopening, made Disney’s excitement about having it back explicit: the “REFRESHED!” label in bold purple was designed to draw attention to the attraction’s return and invite guests who had not ridden recently to give it another look.

The updated map also reflected a meaningful operational change. According to BlogMickey, the new guidemap includes a lower minimum height requirement for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which expands the range of families who can ride together. That kind of change matters at a family-focused park because it turns a ride previously unavailable to shorter children into something the whole group can experience at the same time.

The guidemap also notes a similar treatment for Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin in Tomorrowland, which carries a “RECHARGED!” label in the same bold purple style, indicating that Disney is actively marketing multiple recently refreshed attractions simultaneously.

All of that context makes the fire extinguisher incident on reopening day particularly unfortunate. The setup for a strong return was there. The marketing was in place. The lowered height requirement was ready to bring in families who had been turned away before. And then a fire call during the 5:45 PM hour brought the ride down on its first day back.

How This Affects a Disney Vacation

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad sits in a specific spot in how Magic Kingdom guests plan their days. It is not typically the hardest-to-get ticket in the park, but it draws consistent enough demand that guests who want to ride it without a very long wait generally prioritize it early in the morning or use Lightning Lane selection. On reopening days, that equation shifts significantly. Any time a major attraction returns from a notable absence, the combination of guests who missed it during the closure and guests who see the renewed publicity creates elevated demand that can push wait times well beyond the normal range.

Today’s closure compounds that dynamic. Guests who arrived planning to ride Big Thunder Mountain Railroad on its reopening day have been turned away twice in a single visit, first by the extinguisher incident and the resulting closure, and now by the ongoing downtime that follows a fire response. For families who specifically scheduled their Magic Kingdom day around the reopening, that is a frustrating outcome.

For guests visiting Magic Kingdom in the coming days, the aftermath of today’s incident is worth watching before finalizing plans. Reopening wait times tend to be elevated, and the additional attention the incident has drawn to the attraction will likely keep demand high once it comes back online. Lightning Lane availability for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad will be worth checking and securing early on any day when it is confirmed operational.

The lower height requirement is the genuinely good news buried in an otherwise difficult day for the attraction. Once the ride is cleared to operate again, families with younger children who were previously unable to ride together will have that new option available to them, and the updated guidemap will be steering guests toward it explicitly.

For guests currently in the park or heading to Magic Kingdom today, check the My Disney Experience app for current attraction status before building any plans around Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. The ride is closed as of this writing and no reopening timeline has been announced.

If Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is a priority for your upcoming Magic Kingdom visit, check the My Disney Experience app before your park day to confirm it is running and look at Lightning Lane availability first thing in the morning. The reopening excitement combined with today’s incident will likely keep demand elevated for several days. We will update this article as more information becomes available about the fire call and when the attraction is expected to return to operation.
