We’re still over six months away from the first episode of HBO’s Harry Potter reboot, but there’s already an unexpected update on the show’s second season.

As was announced last month, JK Rowling’s wizarding world is officially set to come to life once again in December. With a brand-new cast that includes Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley – joined by the likes of John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape – HBO has promised that the series will dive even deeper into the books than its cinematic predecessors.

The show’s first trailer confirmed as much. Released in March, this provided glimpses of Harry’s Muggle life with the Dursleys, new scenes of Harry, Ron, and Hagrid at Hogwarts during Christmas, and even a brief look at Hogwarts lessons such as History of Magic.

Fans remain divided on the show. While some were won over by the first footage, others insist that the reboot is unnecessary, considering the success of the original movie franchise led by Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint.

There are also those who take issue with Warner Bros. Discovery continuing to platform Rowling. In the years since the Harry Potter franchise seemingly came to an end, the author has become increasingly known for her passionate stance against the transgender community, with Radcliffe, Watson, and Grint all openly disagreeing with her views.

Judging by the numbers, the show appears poised for success regardless. The first trailer became the most-watched in HBO history, racking up more than 277 million views within 48 hours.

HBO clearly also has high expectations for its performance, as per a new update on Season 2.

‘Harry Potter’ Season 2 Receives Surprise Update

An industry insider has claimed that Season 2 of Harry Potter will begin filming Season 2 in August.

That means the young cast will have roughly two to three months off filming when the current season of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (not Sorcerer’s Stone, as the book and film are known in the U.S.) wraps in May.

HBO boss Casey Bloys previously confirmed hopes to mitigate the impact of the actors’ aging between seasons by filming in relatively close succession. The Harry Potter films followed a similar pattern, wrapping Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001) in March 2001 and kickstarting production on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002) in November that same year. A gap of seven months then followed between the filming of the second and third films.

While Bloys also recently noted that new seasons would not air annually, it’s also been reported that Season 2 will start airing in December 2027.

The entire show is expected to air over the course of a decade, with later installments – such as Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – presumably taking longer due to the longer length and more complex plots of their source material.

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone will run across eight episodes. Whether later seasons will expand their episode counts to accommodate the series’ increasingly complex plots remains unclear.

The show’s first season will follow Harry as he discovers he is a wizard, leaves the Dursleys behind, and begins his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry — where he befriends Ron and Hermione and uncovers a plot involving Lord Voldemort and the mysterious Philosopher’s Stone.

In its second season, the show will follow Harry’s return to Hogwarts as a mysterious force begins petrifying students, and a hidden chamber within the castle is opened. Fans recently noticed that the young cast have followed British actor Owen Cooper on Instagram, sparking rumors that he will play Tom Riddle, aka the young Voldemort, in Season 2.
