At first glance, it might not look like much. A few calendar changes. A couple of new dates added. One project is disappearing altogether. But when you step back and connect the dots, it begins to feel like Marvel is laying the groundwork for its next major era.
And if these reports hold true, Phase 7 may already be taking shape in a way that could define the MCU through the end of the decade.
Phase 6 Is Building Toward a Massive Reset
Before diving into what’s next, it’s important to understand where Marvel is currently headed. Phase 6 is shaping up to be one of the most pivotal stretches in MCU history, largely because of how it’s expected to conclude.
Everything points to a massive culmination with Avengers: Doomsday (2026), followed by Avengers: Secret Wars (2027). These two films are widely expected to bring the Multiverse Saga to a close, tying together years of storytelling across multiple timelines, universes, and characters.
But more than that, they’re expected to reset the board.
Marvel has leaned heavily into Multiverse storytelling over the past few years, introducing alternate realities, legacy characters, and new versions of familiar heroes. That approach has opened the door for major shifts—and Phase 6 appears ready to take advantage of that in a big way.
By the time Secret Wars wraps up, the MCU may look very different. And that’s exactly why Phase 7 is starting to feel so important.
Release Date Changes Quietly Reveal a Bigger Plan
That brings us to the latest report, which comes from industry outlet The Wrap. According to the report, Marvel Studios has made several notable adjustments to its long-term theatrical schedule—and those changes may reveal more than intended.
One previously planned film, set for early 2028, has now been pushed to late July of that same year, creating a significant calendar gap. At the same time, Marvel has added two entirely new release dates in 2029, both positioned in prime blockbuster windows during early summer.
On top of that, another 2028 release has reportedly been removed altogether.
Taken together, these updates suggest that Marvel is restructuring its lineup rather than simply delaying projects. And based on the current schedule, Phase 7 appears to be shaping up as a five-film slate spread across 2028 and 2029.
That’s a smaller, more focused lineup than what fans have seen in previous phases—and it could signal a shift toward quality over quantity.
Fantastic Four’s Next Chapter Could Arrive First
One of the earliest films expected to kick off this new phase is a follow-up to The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025). After that film introduced Marvel’s first family into the MCU, early reactions and industry chatter have already pointed toward a sequel being a priority.
While nothing has been formally confirmed, the core cast—including Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach—is widely expected to return.
The bigger question revolves around where this story would take place. With the Multiverse still in flux following Doomsday and Secret Wars, there’s speculation that the team could either return to their original universe or remain integrated within the main MCU timeline.
Another major element likely to come into play is Franklin Richards, a character long known in Marvel lore for his immense power. If introduced properly, he could become one of the most important figures in the MCU moving forward.
Wakanda’s Story May Continue in a Major Way
Another film expected to land early in Phase 7 is the third installment in the Black Panther series. While details remain tightly guarded, there’s strong momentum behind continuing the story of Wakanda following the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (2022).
Letitia Wright and Winston Duke are both expected to return, especially since their characters are likely to play roles in Avengers: Doomsday. Their involvement in that film could directly shape where the Wakandan story goes next.
Behind the camera, Ryan Coogler is still attached to direct, bringing continuity and vision to the franchise. There’s also been buzz surrounding Denzel Washington joining the cast in a mystery role, which only adds to the intrigue.
One of the more debated possibilities concerns T’Challa’s future. While Marvel has been respectful in honoring Chadwick Boseman, ongoing rumors suggest the studio may eventually revisit the character in some form.
The X-Men Are Finally Stepping Into the Spotlight
Perhaps the most anticipated project in Phase 7 is the long-awaited introduction of the X-Men into the MCU. After years of being separated due to rights issues, Marvel Studios is finally in a position to bring these iconic characters into its main universe.
