Guests visiting Disney World this week may have noticed a major location unexpectedly closed.

Despite major behind-the-scenes movements, with the ascension of Josh D’Amaro to Chief Executive Officer of The Walt Disney Company and Thomas Mazloum’s rise to head Disney Experiences, guests are still flocking to the Disney theme parks, unbothered by the leadership maneuvering. That said, there is much happening on the ground as well.

From the largest expansion in the history of the Magic Kingdom, which will bring Piston Peak National Park and Villains Land to the flagship theme park, to the overhauls at Animal Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, Walt Disney World is on the cusp of a new era. With Bob Iger stepping down and D’Amaro vacating his Disney Experiences position, will the momentum continue? And how will guests react?

In the meantime, domestic travel continues to support Disney’s park business, even if international visitation is on the downtrend. That, teamed with fewer guests spending more money, has ensured the continued profitability of the Disney Experiences division–something some fans are cautious may not be sustainable if prices continue to rise.

With spring break and the busy summer season nearing, Disney World is set for another crowded calendar year, but some things are beyond even the Mouse’s control.

EPCOT Location Closes Down Unexpectedly at Disney World

According to a WDWMagic report, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure experienced significant unplanned downtime on March 11, remaining closed for the entire day with no reopening in sight as the park’s closing approached.

The ride, located inside the park’s expanding France Pavilion area, has become one of EPCOT’s most popular attractions since its debut in 2021. However, technical issues appear to have temporarily halted operations, leaving guests unable to shrink down to the size of a rat and race through Gusteau’s restaurant alongside Remy.

The trackless dark ride reportedly stayed closed throughout the day, with no clear indication from Disney when it might reopen. As evening approached, the attraction still had not resumed operations, suggesting the issue may have required more extensive troubleshooting behind the scenes.

While temporary downtime is fairly common for complex theme park attractions, a full-day closure can significantly affect guest plans—especially for rides that consistently draw long wait times and remain among EPCOT’s headline experiences.

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure utilizes a sophisticated trackless ride system that allows vehicles to move freely through scenes, creating the illusion that guests are scurrying through kitchens, dining rooms, and oversized environments. Systems like this rely on intricate synchronization between vehicles, projection screens, and physical sets, meaning even small technical issues can trigger extended downtime.

The attraction is inspired by Pixar Animation Studios’ beloved 2007 film Ratatouille and originally debuted at Walt Disney Studios Park (soon to be Disney Adventure World) in Disneyland Paris before making its way to Florida.

At EPCOT, guests enter the experience through a charming Parisian courtyard in the France Pavilion, eventually boarding “rat-shaped” ride vehicles that dart through massive kitchen sets and projection-based scenes as Chef Skinner attempts to catch them.

The attraction blends physical sets with large projection screens to create the illusion of scale—placing riders directly inside the culinary chaos of Remy’s world. The unexpected downtime comes only months after Disney made a notable change to the attraction.

In November 2025, Disney temporarily closed Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure for a short refurbishment that replaced the original 3D projection system with upgraded 2D digital visuals.

The original version of the ride required guests to wear 3D glasses, which helped blend projected scenes with physical environments throughout the experience. When the ride reopened days later, those glasses were gone, replaced by what Disney described as brighter and clearer imagery projected in standard 2D.

The change also aimed to make the attraction more accessible for guests who found the 3D effects uncomfortable or disorienting. However, the update sparked debate among theme park fans.

Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure serves as the centerpiece of EPCOT’s expanded France Pavilion area, which opened alongside the ride in 2021. The expansion added new pathways, themed dining, and entertainment offerings—including the nearby restaurant La Crêperie de Paris.

Since opening, the attraction has consistently drawn long lines and remains one of EPCOT’s most in-demand rides, often posting wait times exceeding an hour during busy seasons. Because of its popularity, unexpected closures can have a ripple effect across the park, pushing crowds toward other headliner attractions like Frozen Ever After and Soarin’ Around the World.

Ride closures like this are often resolved overnight after maintenance teams have the chance to inspect ride systems and reset software or hardware components. Still, the timing is notable, coming shortly after the attraction’s shift away from 3D technology—an update that fundamentally altered how the ride’s visuals operate.

For now, guests visiting EPCOT may want to keep an eye on the attraction’s status in the My Disney Experience app before heading toward the France Pavilion.
