More than three decades after Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park (1993), audiences are still showing up in massive numbers to watch dinosaurs gobble up stupid humans. That trend continued last summer with Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), the seventh installment in the long-running series, with an all-new cast led by Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame).

Despite receiving mixed to negative reviews, Jurassic World Rebirth grossed an impressive $869.1 million worldwide, which has left many fans convinced that a sequel is inevitable.

Universal has yet to officially announce a follow-up, but industry rumors say that a second film is already in early development. Reports indicate that director Gareth Edwards is being lined up to return, with negotiations also underway for the main cast to reprise their roles.

But timing points toward an announcement sooner rather than later. After all, Rebirth was officially confirmed in January 2024 — just 18 months before release — and with the studio now sitting on a proven hit, a similar window for a sequel reveal would make perfect sense.

It’s also worth noting that, historically, Universal has moved pretty fast when a Jurassic installment performs at this level. Fallen Kingdom (2018) arrived just three years after Jurassic World (2015), and then Dominion (2022) four years after that (taking into account delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic), and Rebirth three years after the 2022 film.

If Jurassic World Rebirth 2 does happen, the film will likely expand on the groundwork laid by the first film rather than opt for another reset. Rebirth introduced new characters, a new setting, and new mutant dinosaurs like the D-Rex on a third InGen island (Ile Saint-Hubert).

A new film may delve even further into outlandish territory, a trend the first three World films set, with each new installment attempting to outdo the last in terms of shock value, from dinosaur hybrids to human clones, and global threats to super-sized prehistoric locusts.

While nothing is official yet, the commercial success of Jurassic World Rebirth makes a sequel feel less like a question of “if” and more a matter of “when.”

Jurassic World Rebirth stars Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame), Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer), Rupert Friend (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Mahershala Ali (The Green Book), Luna Blaise (Manifest), David Iacono (Dead Boy Detectives), Audrina Miranda (Lopez vs Lopez), Philippine Velge (Station Eleven), Bechir Sylvain (BMF), and Ed Skrein (Deadpool).
