Disneyland Resort guests hoping to try one of the most popular food items around the Southern California vacation destination may be surprised by an extra line item on their receipt: a mandatory 20% tip. A Disney Parks fan sparked a conversation on social media this week after he realized that the frozen treat stand had charged him a gratuity without his consent.

On Tuesday, X (formerly known as Twitter) user Sam Carter (@Cartarsauce) shared his experience visiting Joe’s Italian Ice, an uber-popular frozen treat shop just one mile from Disneyland Resort.

The stand, which serves a rotating selection of Italian ices and soft serve, is typically packed with locals from Anaheim and tourists alike. However, on the day Carter finally decided to stop in, he was treated to an unwelcome charge on his credit card: a 20% tip.

Been wanting to try Joe’s Italian Ice by Disneyland but it’s always slammed. Tho I hear the line moves fast. Ya it’s pretty good but I don’t care for them adding a tip without asking. Major sus, that ain’t right. I don’t mind tipping but come on.

Carter shared a photo of his frozen treat and the receipt, which showed that he spent $7.79 but was charged for a $1.56 (20%) tip, making his total purchase $9.35.

Mandatory gratuity or service charges have grown more common at Table-Service restaurants around the country following the COVID-19 pandemic. However, most states (including California) require that any fees be clearly displayed on the menu or other signage at the restaurant.

In response to the X post, some Disney Parks fans asked Carter whether the menu indicated the mandatory 20% tip or if it was mentioned elsewhere. He confirmed that not only was there no warning, but the employees claimed the tablet that would normally allow customers to select their tip was “broken,” though the credit card reader attached was functional:

The super sus part was the iPad thing outside the window “wasn’t working”, just the cc chip thing. Shady.

The post amassed several replies from Disney Parks fans, many of whom agreed with Carter that an undisclosed mandatory tip was “shady” business practice, especially for such a well-trafficked food establishment near Disneyland Resort.

“I have seen Joe’s but for them to add a tip I would never go back!” @CLS1954 wrote.

“That doesn’t even sound legal adding a tip like that,” @doiknats replied.

Still, others defended Joe’s Italian Ice. From @FrshBakedDisney:

the line is never too long. it does go quick. joes is the best, even with the tip.
