Journey Into Imagination With Figment closed at EPCOT this morning and has yet to reopen. One Walt Disney World Resort guest shared photos from inside the attraction on social media after getting “trapped” on board.
Journey Into Imagination With Figment Backstage Photos

On Friday morning, Reddit user u/Ptucker212 shared two backstage photos of Journey Into Imagination With Figment after the ride broke down. The Disney Park guest said they became “trapped” shortly before the end of the World Celebration attraction. “I can see the exit door,” they commented.

The first image shows a view of a track split, where ride vehicles that are broken or going out of service are taken backstage for repair or storage. Both photos highlight the importance of lighting on Disney Park rides, as the fan-favorite purple dragon animatronics and props are surrounded by plain black curtains, walls, and floors.
World Celebration Ride Remains Closed

Two hours after the Reddit user shared photos from inside Journey Into Imagination With Figment, the EPCOT dark ride still hasn’t reopened. The My Disney Experience app lists the World Celebration attraction as “temporarily closed.”

Sometimes, Walt Disney World Resort executives send push notifications to guests inside the four Central Florida theme parks apologizing for extended ride closures. However, they have yet to do so in this case. This could indicate that Disney expects the ride to be open before EPCOT closes on Friday evening.
It’s unclear what caused Journey Into Imagination With Figment to close on January 2. Walt Disney World Resort rarely acknowledges the reason for attraction shutdowns, and this situation is no exception.
Purple Dragon Controversy

This is hardly the most controversial news item related to Journey Into Imagination With Figment. The attraction starring the iconic purple dragon debuted at EPCOT as “Journey Into Imagination” in the early 1980s. It was an instant hit, and Figment and the DreamFinder were once popular walk-around characters at the second Central Florida Disney park.
In 1999, Walt Disney World Resort introduced “Journey Into YOUR Imagination,” which erased Figment from the Imagination Pavilion attraction. It was such an unpopular change that in 2002, Walt Disney Imagineers introduced the current “Journey Into Imagination With Figment,” which reincorporated the purple dragon into the ride.
Despite Figment’s return, most Disney Parks fans consider the current Journey Into Imagination an inferior version of the original EPCOT attraction.
