Theme parks operate on carefully planned seasonal cycles that require substantial workforce scaling as operating calendars expand from reduced winter schedules to full summer operations serving peak visitor volumes.

The transition from off-season to prime season demands not just reopening shuttered attractions and extending operating hours but recruiting, training, and deploying thousands of seasonal employees across every operational department from food service and merchandise to ride operations and guest services.

These hiring cycles represent critical planning phases where parks must successfully fill hundreds or thousands of positions months in advance to ensure adequate staffing when gates open and crowds arrive expecting fully operational facilities with appropriate service levels.

For regional destination parks like Dollywood that serve as major employment anchors in their communities, these seasonal hiring pushes carry additional significance beyond simply staffing attractions.

The park functions as one of the largest employers in Sevier County, Tennessee, providing jobs ranging from part-time summer positions for high school students to full-time career opportunities with advancement potential and comprehensive benefits packages.

The annual hiring cycle draws applicants from across the region, with many families having multi-generational connections to employment at what has become an institution in the Smoky Mountain tourism economy over its four decades of operation under Dolly Parton’s ownership.

Dollywood’s announcement of multiple January and February hiring events for the 2026 season arrives as the park prepares for its opening while simultaneously managing recent unexpected operational challenges that have affected guest experience during the current holiday season.

The Dollywood Express, one of the park’s most historic attractions with roots predating Parton’s 1986 acquisition, entered an indefinite closure on December 20 due to unscheduled maintenance issues.

This unexpected shutdown during the busy Smoky Mountain Christmas season serves as a reminder that even carefully maintained heritage attractions can experience issues requiring extended repairs, creating situations where parks must manage guest expectations while addressing technical problems that cannot be resolved quickly.

Positions span the entire Dollywood Parks & Resorts portfolio across multiple operational areas. At the main Dollywood park, openings include positions on the award-winning culinary and merchandise teams, ride operators, ticketing, transportation, and house and grounds maintenance. Dollywood’s Splash Country has positions available for lifeguards, culinary services, and house and grounds teams.

The resort properties, including DreamMore Resort and Spa and HeartSong Lodge & Resort, are hiring for food and beverage, front desk, bell and valet services, and housekeeping positions.

A significant hiring focus for 2026 involves NightFlight Expedition, the new indoor temperature-controlled family attraction opening next season. This ride represents one of Dollywood’s most anticipated additions and requires staffing an entirely new attraction team. Working on an opening crew for a major new ride offers employees unique experience being part of a launch team for what Dollywood describes as “the most anticipated new ride in Dollywood’s history.”

Positions are available for the full 2026 operating season as well as shorter peak season openings for applicants seeking summer employment or extra income during Christmas holidays. Minimum age for applicants is 14 years old.

Technical support will be available at hiring events to assist applicants with the online application process if needed.

Benefits and Perks

Dollywood Parks & Resorts offers a comprehensive benefits package designed to attract and retain employees at all levels. The headlining benefit is 100 percent free tuition through Herschend’s GROW U program, eliminating education costs for employees pursuing degrees or certifications.

Employees receive free lunch every working shift and complimentary admission to both Dollywood and Dollywood’s Splash Country for family and friends. The Park Perks program provides free or reduced admission to numerous regional attractions, theaters, and experiences beyond Dollywood properties.

Access to the Dollywood Family Healthcare Center provides convenient medical care for employees. Dollywood also pays a portion of childcare costs for employees whose children are cared for at Upwards-affiliated providers, addressing a significant expense that affects many working families.

Qualified full-time employees receive a comprehensive benefits package including medical, dental, and vision coverage. Leadership development opportunities include an apprenticeship program in conjunction with Walters State Community College, creating pathways for advancement within the organization.

Recent Operational Challenges

The 2026 hiring push comes as Dollywood manages unexpected closures that have affected guest experience during the current holiday season. On December 20, the park announced that the Dollywood Express had entered indefinite closure due to unscheduled maintenance. The historic steam train attraction, which predates Parton’s ownership by decades, closed during the busy Smoky Mountain Christmas period without a confirmed reopening date.

The Dollywood Express originally opened in 1961 as Rebel Railroad before the property underwent multiple ownership changes and rebranding. It became Gold Rush Junction in 1966, then the flagship attraction for Silver Dollar City Tennessee in 1976 before Parton acquired the park in 1986 and renamed it Dollywood.

The attraction most recently underwent scheduled maintenance during summer 2025, but whether those issues relate to the current unexpected shutdown remains unclear. Dollywood has not announced a reopening timeline, leaving the historic attraction unavailable through the remainder of the holiday season and potentially into the 2026 operating year.

Unexpected closures during peak periods create operational challenges requiring staff reallocation and guest communication management. The situation demonstrates that even heritage attractions with decades of operational history can experience issues requiring extended repair periods that cannot be quickly resolved despite maintenance teams’ best efforts.

Looking Ahead to 2026

Dollywood’s 2026 season builds on the momentum of the park’s 40th anniversary celebration throughout 2025. The addition of NightFlight Expedition represents a significant investment in new attractions that expand the park’s offerings while providing year-round operational capability through its temperature-controlled indoor design.

The multi-event hiring strategy across January and February provides multiple opportunities for potential employees to attend at times that suit their schedules. Dollywood notes that new job opportunities are posted throughout the year at dollywoodjobs.com beyond these scheduled hiring events, creating ongoing pathways for employment at various points in the season.
