There’s been a steady stream of Disney news over the last several years, with the company announcing some big projects. From thrilling new rides to brand-new land expansions, there’s never been a time like the present when it comes to Disney’s theme parks.

While a lot is changing worldwide, Disney’s domestic parks are seeing some of the most significant updates. Earlier this summer, guests said their final goodbyes to classic attractions like Tom Sawyer Island and Muppet*Vision 3D, as Walt Disney World enters an exciting and bold new era.

Eventually, these attractions will become entirely new areas, with work moving along quite nicely in Florida. The same is true at Disneyland in California, where all kinds of projects are taking shape.

Guests have a lot to look forward to when it comes to Disney’s original theme park resort, though one project is especially exciting.

Disneyland is set to receive its own boat ride themed around Pixar’s Coco (2017). It was recently confirmed that a permit was filed for the upcoming attraction, noting initial site prep work. Construction and demolition in the area will pick up soon.

Disneyland had previously stated work would begin backstage this fall.

Disneyland’s Coco attraction was announced at Disney’s D23 event in August 2024. During the event, a number of exciting shows, rides, attractions, and theme park updates were discussed, though Disneyland’s Coco ride was one of the most surprising.

According to Disney Parks Blog, Walt Disney Imagineers will draw inspiration from classic dark rides like The Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean.

“We’re bringing our skeletal cast of characters to life in a big way through the latest Audio-Animatronics technology,” Josh D’Amaro, Disney Parks and Experiences chairman, said as he showed off concept art for the attraction. “These figures will appear in ways you’ll have to see to believe.”

Disneyland Resort will also be getting two other new rides, both of which will be inside Avengers Campus at Disney California Adventure.

Alongside these updates, Disneyland will eventually be home to its own version of Pandora—The World of Avatar. This project has been known for a while, though specific details have only now been released. The new land will feel similar to the one located at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, albeit with its own special twists and changes.

In order to make room for Disney’s West Coast Pandora, areas of Disney California Adventure will have to close, including the park’s iconic Monsters Inc. Mike and Sully to the Rescue. The classic dark ride will shut down permanently in early 2026.
