Since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, it’s fair to say that Star Wars has been hit and miss. Entries spanning theatrical releases, anthology films, animated shows, live-action shows, and Disney theme park attractions have failed to impress audiences consistently.
On the small screen, Disney+ shows such as Andor (2022) and The Acolyte (2024) suffered from low viewership, with the latter show’s second season being canceled as a result.

As for big-screen financial failures, Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018) grossed only $393 worldwide against its (minimum) budget of $275 million. The film was dubbed the franchise’s first box-office bomb.
Moving into theme parks, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, the immersive two-night experience at Walt Disney World, famously shut its doors after only 18 months of operation.
However, it turns out there was another major Star Wars flop in gaming. You’ll undoubtedly remember Ubisoft’s highly anticipated “Star Wars Outlaws”, which was released last year.

Set between Star Wars: Episode V — The Empire Strikes Back (1980) and Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi (1983), the game centers on the titular outlaw Kay Vess (Humberly González) as she navigates the galaxy’s highly dangerous criminal underworld.
The franchise’s first open-world title should have been an easy win and an absolute feast for the senses for all Star Wars fans, but it turned out to be a disappointment for many. But even before it hit the shelves, it came under fire from fans for its “janky” gameplay mechanics, “low-grade” graphics, and for the appearance of its lead character, who looked quite different from her mo-cap actor, which led to many describing the game as “woke”.
It might have landed mostly favorable reviews among critics, but fans weren’t as forgiving.

The open-world faraway galaxy adventure also failed to reach its sales targets when it launched, which Ubisoft reported in October.
Now, Ubisoft has announced that there’s a “voluntary redundancy program” underway at “Star Wars Outlaws” studios Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft Stockholm. The program was first reported by French news site Le Figaro (highlighted on ResetEra), but Ubisoft has now officially revealed the plans in a statement shared to the Massive Entertainment X (Twitter) account.
The statement reads: “As part of our ongoing evolution and long-term planning, we have recently realigned our teams and resources to strengthen our roadmap, ensuring our continued focus on The Division franchise and technologies, including Snowdrop and Ubisoft Connect, that power our games.”

This comes amid news that Disney’s sequel trilogy film Star Wars: Episode IX — The Rise of Skywalker (2019), which grossed $1.077 billion at the global box office six years ago, actually carried a jaw-dropping production cost of nearly $600 million before tax breaks.
As for “Star Wars Outlaws”, the game has enjoyed some measure of success. It was originally released for PlayStation 5, Windows, and Xbox Series X/S, however, it was later also ported to Nintendo Switch 2, while the main game continues to get new DLCs.
