The reimagining would’ve seen Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress transformed into a bright pink cake to celebrate the Disney icon’s 60th birthday.
It’s Destination D23 weekend at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort, and the last few days have been full of announcements regarding Disney parks and entertainment around the world. Among other big reveals, Walt Disney Imagineers shared plans to repaint Cinderella Castle to its original color scheme following the controversial 50th-anniversary paint job and update Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress, including the addition of a Walt Disney audio-animatronic like the one in “Walt Disney – A Magical Life” at Disneyland Park.
During the “Beyond the Spires: An Insider Look at Disney Castles” panel, Walt Disney Imagineers took a look back at past color schemes and overlays on Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom Park. At the beginning of the discussion, Experiment 626 arrived to remind Disney Parks fans of the time he TP’d Cinderella Castle to celebrate the grand opening of Stitch’s Great Escape:
Imagineers later reminded fans of one of the most love-it-or-hate-it designs in Disney Park history: the birthday cake overlay on Cinderella Castle to celebrate Walt Disney World Resort‘s 25th anniversary in 1996:

Later, Walt Disney Imagineers revealed that the cake castle wasn’t the first time they considered sweetening up one of Magic Kingdom Park’s iconic attractions. At the panel on Sunday, they shared never-before-seen concept art for a cake overlay on Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress, which would’ve been installed to celebrate Mickey Mouse’s 60th birthday in 1988. However, the plans were canceled.
