Of the numerous holiday-themed family events in Southern California, this history of The Queen Mary’s CHILL has perhaps been the most tumultuous. CHILL’s layout and contents have changed radically over the past few years, with the original, impressive ice sculpture concept being removed (due to logistical reasons) to make way for more general wintertime fun.
This year’s CHILL at The Queen Mary is a significantly more subdued affair, combining ice skating (along a nifty, winding path) with snow tubing, international food offerings, and a handful of other activities that make for a pleasant evening out with friends and loved ones.

Still intact is CHILL’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony, which this season has done away with any chatter and deferred to a lively dance number featuring Santa Claus and friends, followed by a spirited choreographed light show utilizing the surrounding decorations.

In the interest of Christmastime variety, I’d say The Queen Mary: CHILL is worth a visit, but only if you’re aware of what’s in store. Previous years– specifically when the event still had use of the adjacent dome building– were quite a bit more effective. That said, it’s a very pretty place to ice skate.
