Magic Kingdom marked 55 years of operation on October 1, 2026, with a morning ceremony at Cinderella Castle, a message sent straight to guests’ phones, and a new collection of commemorative merchandise.

A Park Built on Walt’s Florida Dream
Walt Disney announced his plans for Florida in 1965, after quietly acquiring more than 27,000 acres of land near Orlando through shell companies. He died in 1966 before the Florida Project was finished, leaving his brother, Roy O. Disney, to see it through.
Magic Kingdom opened on October 1, 1971, alongside hotels like Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Disney’s Polynesian Resort — two locations that still operate and host guests to this day.
The Castle Address
Because the address came just before the usual morning opening, the best views went to guests who arrived during Early Theme Park Entry and claimed spots on Main Street, U.S.A. No announcements had been confirmed beforehand.

A Message in Every Pocket
Guests at the resort also received a push notification through the My Disney Experience app with a message from Schott:
“Happy Anniversary, Walt Disney World! Today, we celebrate 55 years of The Most Magical Place on Earth. Thank you for including Walt Disney World in your lives. Here’s to the memories we’ve made together and all that’s still to come. Wherever your journey takes you today, make it a magical one!” – Joe Schott, President, Walt Disney World.
An Early Rush, Then Empty Walkways
After the morning crowd cleared, Magic Kingdom reportedly turned into something of a ghost town as guests moved on to other parks. Many fans had likely already bought the anniversary merchandise they wanted. October 1 was also a Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party night, with the park closing to day guests at 6 p.m.
The Merchandise
The 55th anniversary collection featured two opening-day cast members as its models, a fitting nod to Disney’s long-held description of cast members as the heart of the guest experience.

How the 55th Compared
The 50th anniversary, “The World’s Most Magical Celebration,” began on October 1, 2021, and ran for 18 months with EARidescent castle décor, new nighttime spectaculars, and a wave of merchandise. The 55th was smaller, but it came amid far greater physical change.
In July 2025, Disney permanently closed the Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat to make room for Piston Peak National Park, a Cars-themed land with a rugged national park setting. Construction walls now hide much of the former waterway, so this was the first major milestone the park has celebrated without that opening-day feature.

Disney has also outlined Villains Land beyond Frontierland, the first land of its kind at a Disney park. These projects follow several recent changes: Tiana’s Bayou Adventure replaced Splash Mountain in 2024, Country Bear Musical Jamboree debuted that same year, and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad returned this year from an extended refurbishment.
