Another classic Disney attraction is preparing for an extended closure, with questions already circulating about its long-term future.
Jungle Cruise is one of Disney’s oldest surviving attractions. The original debuted at Disneyland Park in 1955, taking guests on a boat tour through exotic rivers populated by animatronic wildlife. Its combination of elaborate scenery and joke-cracking skippers eventually became one of Disney’s most recognizable experiences.

The attraction expanded to Magic Kingdom in 1971 and Tokyo Disneyland in 1983, followed by Hong Kong Disneyland in 2005. While each version has its differences, all four retain the original premise of exploring the jungle aboard a guided riverboat.
Tokyo Disneyland’s version received a significant overhaul in 2014, reopening as Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions. The refurbishment introduced new lighting effects, an original soundtrack, and an enhanced nighttime experience.
Today, guests embark on a 10-minute journey through Adventureland, encountering elephants, crocodiles, lions, and other animals. Each boat accommodates up to 32 passengers, with Cast Members guiding the expedition.

However, the Japanese attraction is now preparing to close for almost three months.
Disney Confirms Jungle Cruise Closure for 2027
Tokyo Disney Resort has confirmed that Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions will close on January 6, 2027.
According to the resort’s official refurbishment schedule, the attraction will remain unavailable through March 31, 2027. It is currently expected to resume operations in April, provided the schedule remains unchanged.
This is an unusually lengthy refurbishment compared to many of the shorter maintenance closures scheduled across Tokyo Disneyland.

The resort has not specified exactly what work will take place during the shutdown. However, there is currently no indication that the January closure is permanent.
Jungle Cruise isn’t the only classic attraction closing in January. Splash Mountain will shut down from January 7 through February 4, while Haunted Mansion is scheduled to close from January 8 through February 4 to restore its non-holiday theme.
However, Jungle Cruise’s refurbishment is particularly interesting given the rumors surrounding the future of Tokyo Disneyland’s Adventureland.
Jungle Cruise Rumored to Face Permanent Closure
In April 2025, Tokyo Disney Resort operator Oriental Land Company unveiled its 2035 Long-Term Management Strategy, outlining potential major changes to both Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea.
Alongside confirmed developments, the company released concept artwork showing possible large-scale redesigns of existing park areas.
One image depicted a dramatically different version of Adventureland and parts of Westernland, with several long-running attractions seemingly missing.
These included Jungle Cruise: Wildlife Expeditions, Western River Railroad, the Enchanted Tiki Room, and Swiss Family Treehouse.

In their place, the artwork appeared to show several new attractions inspired by Disney and Pixar films, including Up (2009), The Incredibles (2004), and Moana (2016).
An Up-inspired development resembling Paradise Falls appeared to occupy land currently used by Jungle Cruise and Western River Railroad.
Elsewhere, an apparent Incredibles roller coaster appeared near the Enchanted Tiki Room, while a Moana-themed attraction seemed to occupy an area close to Swiss Family Treehouse.
Crucially, these were preliminary concepts rather than finalized plans. Oriental Land Company has not confirmed that any of these attractions will be demolished or replaced.
However, speculation intensified in April 2026 after the company announced that Aquatopia would permanently close at Tokyo DisneySea.
The attraction, which had operated since the park opened in 2001, closed for good on September 14, 2026.
Notably, Aquatopia was also absent from the concept artwork released in 2025, which depicted a redesigned version of Tokyo DisneySea’s Port Discovery.
Its permanent closure prompted Japanese media outlets to question whether the same fate could await Jungle Cruise and Western River Railroad.
Further speculation followed a special Jungle Cruise experience that ran from July 2 through September 14, 2026.
As part of the summer promotion, skippers took guests on a modified expedition designed to teach them an important lesson about the jungle. Participants also received commemorative stickers.

Some fans interpreted the promotion as a possible farewell to the attraction, although Tokyo Disney Resort never described it as such.
Meanwhile, the Enchanted Tiki Room: Stitch Presents “Aloha E Komo Mai!” has also faced questions about its future.
The attraction, which has featured Stitch since 2008, closed for refurbishment on September 24, 2026, and is scheduled to reopen on October 24.
While this shutdown is temporary, the Tiki Room is another attraction potentially affected by Oriental Land Company’s proposed Adventureland redesign.
Swiss Family Treehouse, which also appeared to be missing from the artwork, has already been closed since April 2022, with no reopening date announced.

Tokyo Disney Resort has demonstrated its willingness to replace longstanding attractions. Alongside Aquatopia’s closure, the resort is currently replacing its original Space Mountain with a new version scheduled to debut in 2027.
A Wreck-It Ralph (2012) attraction is also scheduled to open in Tomorrowland in spring 2027, replacing Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters.
For now, though, Oriental Land Company has not announced any permanent closure for Jungle Cruise, the Enchanted Tiki Room, or Western River Railroad.
Do you think Tokyo Disneyland should replace Jungle Cruise as part of a major Adventureland overhaul?
