Walt Disney World guests staying at Disney’s Contemporary Resort recently found one of the hotel’s most family-friendly amenities unexpectedly out of reach. The resort’s children’s splash pad was closed off behind temporary barriers during refurbishment, with Disney offering no advance public notice and no reopening date for families with upcoming reservations.

The Contemporary Resort Splash Pad Closes for Refurbishment

Barriers blocked access to the water-play area as crews worked across several parts of the space. Plastic coverings were placed over sections of the flooring and several pillars, while surface preparation and apparent repainting took place on a number of features.

The splash pad’s central structure, known for its light-blue finish, gold spots, and the gold bucket perched at the top, was among the elements receiving attention, along with nearby water shooters and shorter pillars. Based on the visible changes, the project appeared largely cosmetic, though Disney did not confirm its full scope.

For families with young children, the timing was frustrating. Resort amenities like this one often fill rest days and mid-afternoon breaks, giving younger guests a chance to cool off and play without leaving the hotel.

Update: Contemporary Resort Splash Pad Reopens With a Fresh Look

There is now good news for families. According to WDW News Today, the splash pad has reopened following its refurbishment, which began with a maintenance closure in September. Water is once again flowing through the play area’s interactive elements.

The repaint has brought a noticeable change. The area now features various shades of blue, while the circles and bucket on the central structure, previously gold, have been switched to dark gray. WDWNT also noted that the flooring and plumbing may have been refreshed where needed.

A Big Week for the Magic Kingdom Resort Area

The reopening lands at a busy moment for the Magic Kingdom resort area, home to the Contemporary and its walkway to the park. This week marks Magic Kingdom’s major seasonal handover, with October 31 bringing the curtain down on fall and Halloween decor and celebrations, and the holiday season taking over from November 1.

For Contemporary guests, that means a front-row seat to one of the park’s biggest transformations of the year, as autumn touches give way to festive decorations. Families arriving for the holidays will also have the splash pad back in action.

The Contemporary’s Wider Refurbishment Continues

The splash pad’s return does not mean the resort is free of construction. Disney’s Contemporary Resort has been undergoing a multi-phase refurbishment since September 2024, with work expected to continue through late 2027. The project has touched the Main Tower and its exterior, exterior panels and balconies, the atrium, Bay Lake Tower, and portions of the fourth-floor observation deck.

Guests may still encounter scaffolding, construction coverings, restricted areas, and daytime work during their stays. Disney has not confirmed whether the splash pad project was directly connected to the broader refurbishment.

Families heading to the Contemporary can once again count on the splash pad as a mid-day option for younger children. The hotel remains one of Walt Disney World’s most recognizable properties, with its A-frame Main Tower, the monorail gliding through the building, and walkable access to Magic Kingdom.

With the holiday season arriving on November 1 and refurbishment work continuing into late 2027, guests should keep an eye on official Disney resort updates ahead of their trip, as conditions around the property may continue to change.
