Universal Orlando has not announced that Reign of Kong is permanently closing, nor has it announced a replacement for the attraction or the Skull Island area. The verified story is an extended closure with an uncertain return—not a secret demolition project.
Skull Island: Reign of Kong Closure Stretches Into September
Maben Parks, which says its closure tracker is generated from live wait-time feeds rather than operator announcements, lists Skull Island: Reign of Kong as closed since September 1, 2026, through its September 10 observation window. Queue-Times likewise showed the attraction as closed on September 10.
Inside the Magic previously covered the King Kong ride’s recurring closures in February, when intermittent downtime was already affecting the attraction’s reliability.
Universal’s own online materials, however, continue to present Skull Island: Reign of Kong as a current Islands of Adventure attraction. Universal Orlando’s official interactive map still lists the experience, and Universal has not publicly attached a reopening date or permanent-closure notice to the current outage.
For guests, that leaves a simple planning problem: Kong should not be treated as a guaranteed part of an Islands of Adventure day until operations resume.
Why Permanent-Closure Speculation Is Easy to Understand
The lack of a return date makes theories about Kong’s future understandable, but not confirmed.
Universal recently confirmed the permanent closure of Fast & Furious: Supercharged at Universal Studios Florida, another attraction that relied heavily on large-scale screen sequences. Inside the Magic has also reported on changes affecting The Lost Continent and confirmed 2027 work in Toon Lagoon, putting multiple older areas of the resort into the redevelopment conversation.
Reign of Kong opened in 2016 as a trackless expedition combining elaborate physical environments, screen-based action and a large King Kong figure. Universal’s own Discover Universal guide still promotes that trackless journey and the attraction’s monster-filled storyline.
None of that establishes that Universal is preparing to remove it. There is currently no verified announcement tying the September outage to demolition, a new land, or a shift away from screen-heavy rides.
Universal Has Changed Kong Before Without Retiring It
Reign of Kong has undergone meaningful operational changes during its lifespan. The attraction’s outdoor route, once absent from regular operation, returned in 2025 after work on that portion of the experience. The ride also underwent a scheduled refurbishment from August 20 through September 3, 2025, according to Inside Universal, showing that a multi-day Kong shutdown can be temporary.
The present situation is different in one important way: no comparable public refurbishment window has surfaced for this September outage. That uncertainty makes the outage worth watching, particularly because an unscheduled closure gives travelers less certainty than a refurbishment announced with defined dates.
Still, an unknown cause is exactly that—unknown. Treating the absence of a reopening date as proof of permanent closure would get ahead of the evidence.
Islands of Adventure Guests Already Face Major Changes
Kong’s downtime is more noticeable because other sections of Islands of Adventure are also changing. Jurassic Park River Adventure has been undergoing an extended refurbishment, while Thunder Falls Terrace permanently closed for a new dining concept. By comparison, no verified demolition activity at Skull Island has been established in the sources reviewed for this report. That separates observable redevelopment from speculation based on downtime.
Reign of Kong has a 36-inch minimum height requirement, according to Universal, making it accessible to a broader range of families than many major thrill rides. When it is unavailable, guests lose one more option between Toon Lagoon and Jurassic Park, a practical concern while nearby attractions and facilities are also cycling through closures or redevelopment.
What Happens Next for King Kong at Universal Orlando
The next meaningful development will be one of three things: Reign of Kong resumes operation, Universal identifies the downtime as a refurbishment or repair, or the company announces a longer-term change. Until one of those happens, permanent-retirement claims remain speculation.
Universal’s current website still recognizes Skull Island and its King Kong attraction, which weighs against presenting the ride as already retired. At the same time, the lengthening outage deserves attention because Universal has not provided guests with a public return date.
