Credit: Warner Bros.Harry Potter fans have an exciting few months ahead with both HBO’s upcoming reboot and a new version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
The divisive series is set to premiere on HBO on Christmas Day, ushering in a new era for JK Rowling’s wizarding world. The reboot will adapt each of Rowling’s seven novels across separate seasons, with Dominic McLaughlin, Alastair Stout, and Arabella Stanton taking over as Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger.
Season one will tackle Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (with the franchise officially ditching the title Sorcerer’s Stone), with Francesca Gardiner serving as showrunner and Succession’s Mark Mylod directing several episodes. Filming took place at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, with the longer TV format expected to restore characters, storylines, and details cut from the 2001 film – such as Nicolas Flamel, Peeves, and Harry’s life before Hogwarts – as well as dodging any plot holes created in the film series.
But before the show debuts, we’re set to receive a brand-new version of a later installment: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.
New Version of ‘Half-Blood Prince’
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince follows Harry through his sixth year at Hogwarts as Voldemort’s influence grows stronger. With Dumbledore’s help, he begins uncovering the Dark Lord’s past and the secret behind his immortality, while Draco Malfoy is drawn into a dangerous mission of his own.
The book was originally published in 2005, but a new version is set to hit shelves in October 2026.
Bloomsbury will release its new illustrated version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince on October 6, with early previews of the book’s artwork depicting scenes such as the Dark Mark’s appearance over Hogwarts, Harry and Tonks approaching the school gates, and Trelawney predicting tragedy within the castle.

The book’s cover shows Harry Potter and Dumbledore inside the cave where they attempt to retrieve a Horcrux, only to be confronted by Inferi. It’s illustrated by British illustrator Levi Pinfold, who replaces Jim Kay, the artist behind the past five installments.
The 2009 film made major changes to the book, cutting much of Voldemort’s backstory and reducing the mystery surrounding the Half-Blood Prince. It also removed the Battle of the Astronomy Tower and Dumbledore’s funeral, while adding an original Death Eater attack on the Burrow and placing more focus on Hogwarts romance.
HBO’s series has the opportunity to restore much of that material. A longer season could spend more time on Tom Riddle’s backstory, properly develop the Half-Blood Prince mystery, and give Harry and Ginny’s relationship more room to breathe, while also adapting the book’s larger climax and emotional aftermath in full.
