EPCOT Restoring Park Icon Back to Its Original Glory, While Making Major Changes Inside

Imagineers designed the towering Mesoamerican pyramid to be a dramatic, multi-hued centerpiece that grounded the international promenade. Over the decades, however, Central Florida’s intense sunlight and weather gradually faded the original decorative accents, leaving the exterior in a muted, monochromatic stone finish.

The current repainting project represents a significant visual refresh for the building after more than four decades:

Restored Accent Colors: Painters are applying rich reddish-brown tones across the horizontal relief bands and accentuating serpent heads, decorative carvings, and animal sculptures with bright turquoise paint.

Dimensional Details: The bold color contrast makes the intricate Mesoamerican architectural motifs stand out against the pyramid’s primary stone facade, restoring much of the visual depth of the original decorative scheme.

Phased Scaffolding Work: Crews began by erecting metal scaffolding and orange protective scrims on the left side of the pyramid, then moved across the front facade. While main entryways were temporarily restricted under stanchions during heavy painting, some entrances have subsequently reopened as work has progressed.

Textured Walkway Refurbishments: Surrounding the pyramid’s base, crews have also been replacing decades-old smooth pinkish walkway concrete with updated, textured, and natural-toned pavement that blends seamlessly into the surrounding Mesoamerican landscape. Some of this walkway and hardscape work began before the current pyramid repainting project.

By combining fresh-coat detailing with hardscape pavement updates, Disney is giving the pavilion’s entire exterior a cohesive, vibrant aesthetic that honors Imagineering history while addressing decades of weathering.

Cultural Closures and Changes Inside the Pyramid

While the exterior of the Mexico Pavilion is getting a stunning vintage revival, step through the heavy wooden doors into the twilight-lit Plaza de los Amigos, and you will find a very different story unfolding. Over the past several weeks, Disney has quietly begun phasing out and reshuffling several of the pavilion’s longest-running cultural offerings inside the pyramid.

The most significant change inside the pyramid is the permanent closure of the Oaxacan Wood Carving workshop. For roughly 24 years, artisan Alba Hernandez Santiago sat inside Plaza de los Amigos, meticulously hand-painting intricate wooden figures known as alebrijes. Visitors could watch Santiago practice traditional Arrazola craft traditions live, ask questions about Mexican heritage, and purchase one-of-a-kind art pieces directly from the artist.

In late August 2026, Disney placed the artisan shop on a 50% liquidation sale and permanently shuttered the demonstration booth. The loss of the Oaxacan wood-carving station marks the end of one of World Showcase’s longstanding resident artisan demonstrations, leaving Disney fans to ponder how the space will be repurposed. Some observers have speculated that the newly cleared area could ultimately serve as a queue overflow for the neighboring, perpetually crowded La Cava del Tequila bar. However, Disney has not announced any replacement use for the space.

Indoor Reshuffling: Kidcot and Mariachi Cobre Move Locations

The removal of the wood-carving booth has triggered a domino effect of internal location shifts throughout the pavilion’s interior marketplace:

Relocated Kidcot Fun Stop: The pavilion’s Kidcot station, where young parkgoers collect international mementos and craft stamps, was dismantled from its original location deeper inside the pavilion. Disney has established a replacement Kidcot table directly inside the main entrance doors of the pyramid. While the experience remains available, placing it at the front entryway keeps crowd traffic flowing away from the congested central plaza.

Mariachi Cobre Moves Indoors: In another major operational shift, Mariachi Cobre—the long-running musical ensemble that has performed traditional Mexican folk music at EPCOT since opening day in 1982—has moved its primary performance stage inside the pyramid.

New Indoor Stage Setup: The band now performs its popular 25-minute musical sets in the space previously occupied by the Kidcot station and artisan exhibits inside Plaza de los Amigos. While Mariachi Cobre has historically performed outdoors near La Cantina de San Angel along World Showcase Lagoon, bringing the group indoors offers welcome shelter from Florida’s extreme summer heat. It fills the interior courtyard with live acoustic music.

The ongoing work at the Mexico Pavilion encapsulates EPCOT’s evolving identity. On the outside, Disney is showing incredible attention to historic preservation, spending months carefully restoring original decorative colors to give the pyramid a striking visual presentation after decades of weathering.
