Nighttime spectaculars have long been a major part of the Disney park experience, with fireworks serving as the traditional finale at resorts around the world.
That has made one unusually long absence particularly noticeable this year.
Since June, guests at two Disney parks have gone without their usual fireworks show as part of a three-month seasonal hiatus. That break is now nearly over, with the spectacular officially scheduled to return in just over a week.
There is, however, a catch.
Its comeback will last just one night before another fireworks show takes its place.
Disney Fireworks Return After Three-Month Hiatus
The parks in question are Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, where Sky Full of Colors will finally return on September 15.
The show has been absent since June 15, bringing to an end a three-month stretch without the resort’s regular fireworks offering.
Tokyo Disney Resort routinely suspends fireworks during the warmer summer months, although the resort’s operator, The Oriental Land Company, has never publicly attributed this hiatus to a specific reason.
Its September return will be extremely brief.
Sky Full of Colors is currently scheduled to be performed on September 15 before disappearing from the calendar again the following day.
This time, however, guests will not be left without fireworks.
From September 16 through October 31, Night High Halloween will take over at both Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea as part of the resort’s annual Halloween celebrations. The seasonal show pairs fireworks with Halloween-themed music and has become a regular fixture of the resort’s autumn entertainment lineup.
That leaves September 15 as a rare one-night window for guests hoping to catch Sky Full of Colors between its summer hiatus and Halloween replacement.
The fireworks comeback also arrives alongside another major change to Tokyo Disney Resort after dark.
Disney Says Permanent Goodbye to Nighttime Spectacular
While fireworks return on September 15, another nighttime show will disappear for good one day earlier.
Reach for the Stars will give its final performance at Tokyo Disneyland on September 14, ending a run that began in September 2024.
The Cinderella Castle projection show – detailed by the resort as “a nighttime spectacular presented at Cinderella Castle that brings beloved characters to life as they reach for the stars in pursuit of their dreams” – is currently operating in a special farewell format titled Reach for the Stars: Everlasting Dreams.
The limited-time version expands the original production with an additional epilogue, returning characters, exclusive music, and a drone display above Cinderella Castle. Fantasyland currently closes earlier than the rest of the park to accommodate the show.
It is a bigger sendoff than the show’s initial reception may have suggested.
Reach for the Stars was never especially well received by some Tokyo Disney Resort regulars, with criticism focusing heavily on its reliance on movie clips rather than a stronger original story.
The production did introduce several technical firsts, including Marvel characters appearing in a Tokyo Disneyland nighttime spectacular, while combining projections with lighting, lasers, pyrotechnics, and other effects.
Still, its retirement means Tokyo Disneyland is about to undergo a noticeable nighttime reset.
