Disney’s castles may share the same fairytale purpose, but what guests can actually do inside them varies wildly around the world. At Disneyland in California, Sleeping Beauty Castle hides a walkthrough attraction. Magic Kingdom’s Cinderella Castle contains a restaurant, boutique, and ornate passageways, while Disneyland Paris lets guests explore galleries above its castle and encounter a dragon beneath it.
Meanwhile, Shanghai Disneyland’s enormous Enchanted Storybook Castle packs in dining, shopping, character experiences, and its own walkthrough attraction.
Soon, however, guests at one Disney park will lose access to one of its most substantial castle experiences for an indefinite period.
Cinderella’s Fairy Tale Hall Is Closing Indefinitely
Cinderella’s Fairy Tale Hall is a self-guided walkthrough inside Cinderella Castle, allowing guests to explore rooms and displays inspired by Cinderella (1950).
Unlike a traditional ride, the attraction is designed to be explored at guests’ own pace. Its interiors include paintings, dioramas, artwork, a throne room, and a recreation of Cinderella’s glass slipper.
Tokyo Disney Resort describes the experience as follows:
“Cinderella and Prince Charming have opened Cinderella Castle to Guests even while they are away. Cinderella wished to share the story of the magical way that she became a princess.”
“Guests are welcome to wander through the castle to view paintings, dioramas, and other artworks that follow her story. Guests of all ages will enjoy entering into the world of this beloved princess.”
The attraction opened in 2011, replacing the former Cinderella Castle Mystery Tour, which had occupied the castle until 2006.
That earlier attraction had a much darker tone, guiding guests through scenes involving Disney Villains, including the Horned King from The Black Cauldron (1985).
Tokyo Disney Resort has not announced why Cinderella’s Fairy Tale Hall is closing, whether changes are planned inside, or when guests can expect it to return.
For now, September 30 is the final confirmed operating day before the attraction disappears from the park’s lineup indefinitely.
Can Guests Still Go Inside Cinderella Castle?
The closure does not necessarily mean Cinderella Castle itself will become completely inaccessible.
Guests should still be able to enter portions of the castle’s lower level, including the passage beneath the structure.
This area contains five large mosaics depicting Cinderella’s story, created from more than 100,000 pieces of Venetian glass.
The Glass Slipper, a shop specializing in glass products, is also located within the castle’s lower entrance area and remains listed by Tokyo Disney Resort.
What guests will lose is access to the castle’s upper interior and its dedicated walkthrough experience.
That puts Tokyo Disneyland in a different position from several other Disney castle parks, where substantial interior access remains part of the guest experience.
At Disneyland in California, guests can enter Sleeping Beauty Castle and explore a walkthrough featuring detailed scenes based on the 1959 animated film.
Disneyland Paris offers even more. Guests can climb into La Galerie de la Belle au Bois Dormant above the castle, while La Tanière du Dragon beneath it contains the resort’s famous sleeping dragon.
Magic Kingdom also allows guests to experience Cinderella Castle from within. Visitors can pass through its mosaic-lined corridor when operations permit, dine at the famously expensive (plus hard to reserve) Cinderella’s Royal Table, or visit Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique.
Shanghai Disneyland’s Enchanted Storybook Castle contains multiple experiences, including dining, shopping, character interactions, and its “Once Upon a Time” Adventure walkthrough.
Tokyo Disneyland will therefore still offer some access to Cinderella Castle after October 1.
However, without Cinderella’s Fairy Tale Hall, guests will no longer be able to explore its upper rooms or experience the attraction that has occupied them for the past 15 years.
With no reopening date currently confirmed, there is no telling how long that access will remain unavailable.
