‘Harry Potter’ Attraction to Close in 2027 at Islands of Adventure: What’s Closing and for How Long?

A visit to Hogwarts usually begins long before Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey starts moving. Guests pass through the castle gates, enter familiar classrooms, encounter talking portraits, and walk through some of Universal Orlando Resort’s most carefully constructed environments.

For nearly two weeks in 2027, that journey will be unavailable.

Universal Orlando Resort has scheduled Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey for a temporary closure from February 8 through February 19, 2027. The dates appear on Universal’s official theme-park hours and temporary-closures page, giving future visitors substantial notice—but also placing an important limitation on vacations built around The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

Universal Orlando Sets February 2027 Closure for Harry Potter Ride

Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is located inside Hogwarts Castle in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Hogsmeade at Universal Islands of Adventure. Universal describes the experience as a dark ride that carries guests aboard an “enchanted bench,” sending them through the castle grounds and toward the Quidditch pitch.

The company currently classifies the February interruption as a temporary closure, not a permanent change. February 8 through February 19 covers 12 calendar days, making February 20 the earliest expected return based on the published range.

However, Universal does not explicitly state that the attraction will reopen February 20. Refurbishment schedules can change, so guests arriving near either end of the window should check Universal Orlando’s website and app again before visiting.

Universal has not explained what maintenance will be performed. There is no official indication that the project will replace filmed sequences, alter the story, upgrade particular effects, or substantially change the experience. Any promises of a sharper, smoother, or noticeably different ride would currently be speculation.

That distinction matters because expectations have surrounded previous work on the attraction. A November 2025 maintenance closure prompted questions about possible improvements, while an earlier announced period had been scheduled for November 3–16. The 2027 dates show another planned interruption, but they do not reveal what guests will find afterward.

What Islands of Adventure Guests Will Experience Differently

The closure does not mean Hogsmeade itself will close. Universal’s official Hogsmeade attraction guide continues to identify Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure, Flight of the Hippogriff, shops, dining, and other experiences within the land.

Guests with park-to-park admission can also use the Hogwarts Express to travel between Hogsmeade and Diagon Alley, subject to its operating status. Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts at Universal Studios Florida and Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry at Epic Universe are separate attractions and are not included in this announced closure.

Still, Forbidden Journey is not interchangeable with another Harry Potter ride. Its queue is the primary walkthrough experience inside Hogwarts Castle, including spaces modeled after Dumbledore’s office, the Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom, and the Gryffindor common room. Universal has not said whether any portion of that queue will be offered separately while the ride is closed.

That makes the loss larger than one unavailable set of ride vehicles. Guests visiting February 8–19 could still photograph the castle and explore Hogsmeade, but they should not expect the standard journey through Hogwarts unless Universal announces a separate castle-walk option.

The practical solution is straightforward: travelers whose dates remain flexible should place Islands of Adventure outside the closure window. Those already committed to a February 8–19 visit should prioritize the remaining Hogsmeade attractions and consider dividing their Wizarding World time among Universal Studios Florida and Epic Universe.

Hogwarts Has Already Undergone Visible Work

The scheduled ride refurbishment follows exterior work performed on Hogwarts Castle in 2026. Scaffolding and scrims covered portions of the structure while crews refreshed its exterior, although Forbidden Journey continued operating during that project.

Inside the Magic documented the castle’s partially covered appearance and its later emergence from the refurbishment. That work should not be confused with the 2027 closure: one primarily affected the landmark’s exterior presentation, while the newly published schedule specifically removes the attraction from operation.

Forbidden Journey has anchored Hogsmeade since the land opened in 2010. Inside the Magic’s original spoiler-free review described its unusual combination of dark-ride, simulator, and thrill-ride elements—a mixture that remains difficult to replace elsewhere in a day at Islands of Adventure.

Universal has given guests time to prepare. What it has not provided is a reason to expect anything beyond routine refurbishment. For now, the honest promise is narrower: Hogwarts’ signature ride will be unavailable for 12 days, and Harry Potter-focused travelers should plan their February 2027 visit accordingly.
