Disney has installed construction barriers around a large section of World Celebration Gardens, blocking guests from an area that has struggled with repeated problems almost from the beginning. While Disney hasn’t announced exactly what crews are preparing to do, the location of those barriers is getting attention.
At the center of the situation is EPCOT’s in-ground lighting system.
The lights were designed to become one of the defining visual elements of the park’s massive transformation. Instead, Disney has spent years dealing with failures, repairs, and temporary fixes.
Now, the question is whether Disney plans to invest in another major repair — or finally remove the troubled lighting altogether.
Disney Blocks Off Part of World Celebration
According to reports from Blog Mickey, rolling construction barriers now surround roughly half of the central planter inside World Celebration Gardens.
The barriers create a continuous wall along both sides of the planter, preventing guests from accessing a sizable portion of the walkway behind Spaceship Earth. Disney has also placed retractable stanchions along another nearby path.
The rest of the plaza remains accessible, and guests can still see Spaceship Earth from the open portion of the area.
Interestingly, there aren’t any obvious clues about what Disney intends to do next. No major construction equipment or materials were visible when the barriers appeared.
That leaves the timing and location of the closure particularly interesting.
EPCOT’s Lighting Has Struggled for Years
World Celebration Gardens officially opened in December 2023 as one of the final major pieces of EPCOT’s years-long transformation.
Its nighttime appearance became an important part of the design.
Lighting embedded into the pavement created illuminated patterns throughout the area, complementing Spaceship Earth’s nighttime lighting. In theory, it helped transform the central gardens after dark and gave the redesigned heart of EPCOT its own identity.
Keeping those lights working has proven much more difficult.
The system dealt with problems almost from the time the area opened. After numerous stops and starts, Disney finally had the lighting operating fully again in December 2024.
That victory didn’t last long.
By January 2025, strips had started separating from the ground again. Mortar beneath them continued to deteriorate, and portions eventually began popping up enough to create a potential tripping hazard.
Disney eventually had to take more drastic action.
Disney Has Already Tried Temporary Repairs
By June 2025, Disney blocked off a large section of the central planter while addressing the continuing problems.
Rather than completely rebuilding the system, crews used what appeared to be a temporary solution. Disney screwed loosened plastic strips directly into the ground to keep them secured.
That history makes the newest round of barriers much more significant.
Disney has now been dealing with problems involving these lights for a considerable portion of World Celebration Gardens’ relatively short existence. At some point, the company has to decide whether continually repairing the system makes sense.
There are essentially two possibilities on the table right now.
Disney could be preparing for a more substantial repair that finally addresses the underlying problems. That could potentially involve removing portions of the existing system and reinstalling or rebuilding them in a way that prevents the repeated failures.
The other possibility is much more dramatic.
Disney could decide the lighting simply isn’t worth continuing to maintain.
Could Disney Remove the EPCOT Lights Entirely?
For now, there’s no confirmation that Disney has decided to permanently remove the in-ground lighting.
That’s important to make clear.
The current construction barriers only show that Disney has restricted access to the troubled area. There’s no visible work yet that definitively reveals whether crews are repairing, replacing, or removing anything.
Still, permanent removal has become a legitimate possibility worth watching because of the system’s history.
Disney has already spent time trying to get the lights working properly. They returned to full operation, failed again, required areas to be blocked off, and eventually needed a stopgap solution just to keep loose pieces secured.
That isn’t exactly the track record Disney likely envisioned for one of the signature design elements of its newly rebuilt EPCOT hub.
The company now has to determine how much more it wants to invest in keeping that feature alive.
A Difficult Decision for EPCOT
Removing the lighting would solve the maintenance problem, but it would also eliminate part of World Celebration’s intended nighttime atmosphere.
That’s what makes the situation especially interesting.
This isn’t an aging EPCOT feature that has survived for several decades. World Celebration Gardens is still relatively new. Permanently removing a major design element this soon would represent a notable change from the original vision for the area.
At the same time, repeated repairs aren’t an ideal long-term solution either.
Disney hasn’t revealed what is happening behind the new barriers, so there’s still a chance crews are preparing another attempt at permanently fixing the lighting system.
But after years of trouble, another possibility is increasingly difficult to ignore.
Disney may eventually have to choose between spending more money to save EPCOT’s troubled in-ground lights or removing them for good. For now, the newest construction walls suggest something is happening — and what Disney does next could determine whether this part of the redesigned EPCOT survives.
