Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle plays an important role alongside Tom Holland’s Peter Parker in the new movie. The two heroes find common ground when it comes to protecting New York City, even though they have very different ideas about how that should happen.
Yet Marvel also moves away from one part of Frank’s established identity.

In fact, the movie never actually calls him the Punisher.
It may sound like a small detail at first. However, that choice becomes more interesting when looking at how Marvel presents Frank throughout the rest of the movie.
Marvel Changes Frank Castle’s Identity
As first pointed out by The Direct, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) consistently refers to Bernthal’s character as Frank rather than Punisher.
Peter does the same throughout their time together. Even when the two clash over Frank’s willingness to use lethal force, Spider-Man treats him more like another person trying to protect New York than the feared vigilante associated with the Punisher name.
That stands apart from Bernthal’s more recent appearances in Daredevil: Born Again and Punisher: One Last Kill, which spent more time building the reputation surrounding his vigilante persona.
This time, Marvel takes Frank in another direction.
He hasn’t suddenly become a traditional superhero. Frank remains willing to use deadly force, and that naturally creates problems between him and Peter. But his reputation around New York appears to have changed considerably.
Once viewed as a wanted killer, Frank now operates as a vigilante with his own code. Other people appear more comfortable having him around as well. Even MJ spends time alone with Frank without treating him like someone she needs to fear.
That evolution becomes even clearer as his relationship with Peter develops.
Spider-Man and Frank Castle Find Common Ground
Peter enters Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) in a very different place after Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021).
With his loved ones no longer part of his life, Peter throws himself into being Spider-Man. Protecting New York becomes his primary focus, and that eventually puts him alongside another person determined to protect the city.
Frank and Peter certainly don’t agree on everything.
Their methods are about as different as they could be. Spider-Man tries to prevent Frank from taking things too far, while Frank remains much more willing to permanently eliminate someone he believes poses a threat.
Still, both characters care about protecting ordinary people.
That gives Marvel room to build a partnership that can shift between cooperation and confrontation. Peter doesn’t necessarily approve of what Frank does, but he recognizes that there is more to him than his violent reputation.
The movie puts that relationship to its biggest test while Peter and Frank pursue Jean Grey.
Frank Castle Makes a Major Mistake
After the Department of Damage Control captures Jean, Peter visits her and discovers that the situation isn’t as simple as he initially believed.
Jean isn’t simply evil. Instead, she wants revenge for her sister’s death.
Frank doesn’t receive that information before making his next move.
While Jean holds a major section of New York City hostage, Frank fires a bullet in her direction. Peter realizes what is about to happen and puts himself between Frank and Jean.
Spider-Man takes the shot.
The decision shocks Frank, and what happens next shows just how differently Marvel wants audiences to view him by this point in the MCU.
Rather than simply continuing after Jean, Frank immediately turns his attention toward Peter. He rushes his injured friend to the hospital, where doctors and nurses manage to stabilize him.
That leads to another surprising moment for the character.
The MCU No Longer Treats Frank Like the Punisher
Frank has a complicated history with hospitals in the MCU.
During Daredevil Season 2, he went on a rampage inside one. That history makes his experience at the hospital in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) particularly noticeable.
Nobody tries to force him out while Peter recovers.
Hospital workers and members of law enforcement apparently recognize that Frank isn’t there to cause trouble. Instead, they understand that he wants to help Spider-Man.
They even give him the time and space necessary to pose as Spider-Man while Peter slips away and disappears among the people gathered outside.
That is a long way from the version of Frank Castle who previously operated from the shadows while authorities hunted him.
The movie also shows the public becoming more accepting of Frank. Rather than presenting him entirely as a dangerous killer, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) increasingly treats him as an antihero who directs his violence toward people he believes deserve it.
What Happens to the Punisher After Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026)?
Marvel hasn’t revealed exactly where Frank Castle goes from here.
There currently isn’t a follow-up to Punisher: One Last Kill in development. Another season of Daredevil: Born Again is coming, however, leaving one possible place for Bernthal to appear again.
Marvel could also reunite Frank with Spider-Man.
Their partnership in Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) gives the MCU another dynamic to explore. Peter wants to keep Frank under control, while Frank brings a much more aggressive approach to protecting New York.
For now, though, Marvel has made a notable change to Frank Castle without delivering a lengthy explanation for it.
The Punisher name carried years of history and fear with it. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) strips that away and focuses almost entirely on Frank Castle himself.
He still has the violence, the complicated morality, and the willingness to cross lines that Spider-Man won’t. What has changed is how the world around him responds.
After years of Marvel building the Punisher identity, Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026) takes Frank in the opposite direction. For the moment, Marvel appears ready to leave the Punisher name behind and let Frank Castle stand on his own.
