As HBO prepares for Season 1, those casting choices continue to fuel debate online. While several newcomers have received plenty of support, one major recasting has generated a much stronger reaction.
Harry Potter Is Starting Over With a New Generation
The Harry Potter books became a worldwide phenomenon before Warner Bros. turned the story into an equally successful film franchise.
For an entire generation, Daniel Radcliffe was Harry Potter. Emma Watson became synonymous with Hermione Granger, while Rupert Grint brought Ron Weasley to life.
Those performances helped define the characters for millions of viewers.
Now, HBO is starting the story again.
Rather than continuing the original movies, the television adaptation will retell the story of the books with a new cast. That gives HBO more time to explore the source material, but it also creates an unavoidable comparison.
Fans already know these characters. More importantly, many viewers already have favorite performances attached to them.
That has made reactions to HBO’s new cast decidedly mixed.
HBO Is Recasting Harry Potter for Its Television Reboot
This is a recasting of the familiar Harry Potter characters for a new adaptation.
The actors from the original film series established versions of Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, McGonagall, Hagrid, Snape, and countless others. HBO has now selected new performers to take over most of those roles for its reboot.
In other words, viewers aren’t meeting entirely new characters. They’re watching new actors inherit roles previously portrayed on screen.
Some casting decisions have earned praise. Others have raised questions about how closely HBO plans to follow the books’ descriptions or the films’ established expectations.
And with so many famous performances being recast, disagreement was probably inevitable.
Meet the New Harry, Ron, and Hermione
Perhaps no casting decision mattered more than finding the new Golden Trio.
Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson spent a decade growing up alongside their characters. HBO needed three young performers prepared to begin that journey again.

- Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley
- Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger
These three actors will become the center of HBO’s adaptation.
They’ll also face constant comparisons with the stars who came before them. Still, the television format gives each performer a chance to build a different interpretation over several seasons.
And Harry, Ron, and Hermione aren’t the only familiar faces getting new actors.
New Faces Are Taking Over Hogwarts
HBO has also recast several of Hogwarts’ most recognizable characters.
The confirmed lineup includes:
- John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore
- Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall
- Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
- Lox Pratt as Draco Malfoy
- Rory Wilmot as Neville Longbottom
Each actor steps into a role with considerable history.
Richard Harris and Michael Gambon both famously portrayed Dumbledore in the original films. Maggie Smith became closely associated with McGonagall, while Robbie Coltrane’s Hagrid remains another beloved performance.
Tom Felton and Matthew Lewis also became closely connected to Draco and Neville.
HBO’s cast now has the difficult job of making those characters their own.
The Weasleys and Dursleys Are Getting Recast, Too
The overhaul stretches well beyond Hogwarts.
Harry’s life with the Dursleys and his growing connection to the Weasley family remain important parts of the story. HBO has selected another group of actors for those roles.
The new cast includes:
- Gracie Cochrane as Ginny Weasley
- Tristan Harland as Fred Weasley
- Gabriel Harland as George Weasley
- Ruari Spooner as Percy Weasley
- Bel Powley as Petunia Dursley
- Daniel Rigby as Vernon Dursley
- Amos Kitson as Dudley Dursley
Together, these casting decisions show just how extensive HBO’s reboot really is.
Almost every major corner of Harry’s world will feature a different face. However, one casting announcement has attracted far more controversy than most.
Paapa Essiedu’s Snape Recasting Sparks Backlash
Paapa Essiedu will take over the role of Severus Snape, one of the franchise’s most recognizable characters.
Alan Rickman previously played Snape throughout the original films, delivering a performance that became closely tied to the character. Naturally, Essiedu was always going to face comparisons.
Some fans have criticized HBO’s decision to cast a black actor as Snape, pointing to the character’s description in the books. Fans are certainly allowed to disagree with a recasting or feel that an actor isn’t the right fit for a beloved character.
However, parts of the reaction have crossed a clear line.
Essiedu has revealed that he received racist abuse and even death threats after landing the role. Former Harry Potter actor Jason Isaacs has also defended Essiedu and condemned the racist attacks.
Fans don’t have to agree with HBO’s casting decision. But blatantly racist remarks, personal attacks, and death threats go far beyond reasonable criticism of a television recast.
HBO’s Harry Potter Will Have to Win Fans Over
Recasting characters this famous was never going to please everyone.
HBO is asking audiences to separate a new Harry Potter adaptation from performances many have watched for more than two decades. That challenge stretches from Harry and Hermione to Dumbledore, Hagrid, and Snape.
Fans can certainly debate whether individual casting decisions work. The real test, however, will come when audiences finally see these actors inhabit the characters across full episodes.
For Essiedu, that challenge carries additional weight because of the ugly reaction surrounding his casting.
HBO has committed to a new generation of Harry Potter. Now, the new cast will have the opportunity to prove that these familiar characters can work with very different faces behind them.
