Sometimes, it is one of the smaller experiences that disappears.
That is exactly what is happening inside the Mexico Pavilion, where a unique shopping location is preparing to close permanently. The final day is quickly approaching, and Disney is already offering a major discount before the doors close for good.
For guests who have always enjoyed finding unusual souvenirs around World Showcase, this one may sting a little more than the average store closure.
A Permanent Closure Is Coming to the Mexico Pavilion
Guests visiting EPCOT over the next few days will have one final opportunity to stop by the Oaxacan Wood Carvings shop inside the Mexico Pavilion.
The store is set to close on September 1, making Monday its final day of operation. That leaves very little time for anyone hoping to visit before it disappears.
There is also a pretty big sale happening before the closure.
Everything inside the location is currently being offered at 50% off. For guests who already planned to visit EPCOT before the end of the month, that creates one last opportunity to purchase one of the shop’s distinctive carvings at a significantly lower price.
The closure is permanent, but there is still one major question surrounding what happens next.
At this point, no reason has been given for why the store is closing. There also isn’t any confirmed information about what, if anything, will eventually replace it.
That means the Mexico Pavilion could eventually welcome another shopping experience into the space, or Disney could have something entirely different planned. For now, guests shouldn’t assume a replacement is on the way until more information is announced.
This Isn’t Your Typical Disney World Souvenir Shop
The closure stands out because Oaxacan Wood Carvings isn’t simply another location selling the same Disney merchandise guests can find throughout the resort.
The merchandise itself is part of the experience.
Each figure sold at the shop is handmade using Copal wood harvested from the Oaxacan Valley in southern Mexico. Local artists carve the figures using machetes and pocketknives before sanding and carefully painting them. The finished creations often combine characteristics of real animals with mythical creatures.
That makes each piece feel very different from the more traditional Disney souvenirs found elsewhere around Walt Disney World.
Guests can certainly buy Mickey ears, shirts, plush toys, pins, and character merchandise throughout EPCOT. Those items are part of a Disney vacation for plenty of families. But World Showcase has traditionally offered another kind of shopping experience as well.
The individual pavilions give guests a chance to browse merchandise connected to the countries and cultures they represent.
The Oaxacan carvings fit naturally into that idea.
Rather than simply placing Disney characters inside a Mexico-themed store, the location gave guests access to handcrafted pieces tied directly to Mexican artistic traditions. That distinction is what makes its permanent closure notable, even if the location itself is much smaller than EPCOT’s major attractions.
World Showcase Shopping Has Always Been Part of EPCOT’s Appeal
Shopping around World Showcase can sometimes feel like an attraction of its own.
Each pavilion has its own personality, and the merchandise plays an important role in creating that atmosphere. Guests can walk from one country to another and find food, drinks, architecture, entertainment, and souvenirs that change along the way.
That variety is a major reason some guests spend hours simply exploring the World Showcase promenade rather than rushing between rides.
The Mexico Pavilion is particularly interesting because so much of its experience sits inside the massive pyramid that serves as its centerpiece.

Its departure doesn’t mean shopping is disappearing from the pavilion. Other stores will remain available, giving guests additional places to browse for Mexico-inspired souvenirs.
Still, losing a specialized location inevitably changes the merchandise mix.
And for longtime EPCOT fans, those smaller changes can add up.
EPCOT Continues to Change
The timing also comes as EPCOT finds itself in another period of transition.
Over the last several years, Disney has made major changes throughout the park. New attractions, updated areas, restaurants, entertainment offerings, and other additions have gradually reshaped the EPCOT experience.
More changes are coming.
Spaceship Earth is eventually expected to receive another major update, giving Disney an opportunity to refresh one of the park’s most recognizable experiences. The attraction remains the centerpiece of EPCOT in more ways than one, sitting inside the massive geodesic sphere guests see as soon as they approach the park.
While a small shop closing inside World Showcase obviously isn’t comparable to a future overhaul of Spaceship Earth, both developments show how EPCOT continues to evolve.
Not every piece of that evolution will come with concept art, construction walls, or a major Disney announcement.
Some changes happen much more quickly.
In this case, guests have only a matter of days to say goodbye.
There Is Still Time for One Final Visit
Anyone visiting EPCOT before September 1 still has a chance to experience the Oaxacan Wood Carvings shop before its permanent closure.
And with everything currently marked 50% off, the remaining days could draw extra attention from guests looking for one final souvenir.
After that, the future of the space remains uncertain.
