September always brings a different feel to Disney’s flagship park, but this year, guests will notice several operational changes that could affect when they visit, how long they stay, and what experiences they’ll have access to.
Some of these updates happen every fall, while others are limited to select guests. Either way, anyone planning a September trip should know what’s changing before arriving at the park.
From earlier closing times on many nights to the end of a special summer offering, here’s what Disney has confirmed for Magic Kingdom beginning in September.
Halloween Season Takes Over the Park
September officially marks the point when Halloween becomes the focus at Magic Kingdom. Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party moves into full swing, transforming the park with festive decorations, themed entertainment, specialty food, exclusive character appearances, and trick-or-treat locations throughout the evening.
The event remains one of Walt Disney World’s most popular seasonal offerings, drawing guests from around the world who want to experience Halloween in a family-friendly environment.
One of the biggest differences between party nights and regular operating days involves Disney’s costume policy. During normal park hours, guests age 14 and older generally cannot wear costumes inside Magic Kingdom. However, those attending Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party may dress up, provided they follow Disney’s costume guidelines. That temporary exception has become one of the event’s biggest draws each year.
The party will be held on September 1, 4, 8, 11, 13, 15, 18, 20, 22, 24, 25, 27, and 29, giving Disney plenty of opportunities to bring its annual Halloween celebration to life throughout the month.
Earlier Closing Times Return
Those party dates also bring one of the biggest changes guests need to know about before planning their vacation.
On every Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party date, Magic Kingdom will close at 6 p.m. for guests without party tickets. Once regular operating hours end, only guests with tickets to the separately priced event may remain inside the park.
That means visitors using a standard park ticket should carefully review the calendar before choosing a Magic Kingdom day. Visiting on a non-party day will provide significantly more time to experience attractions, entertainment, and dining than visiting when the park closes early.
Even though regular guests must leave at 6 p.m. on party nights, everyone visiting during September can still enjoy the festive Halloween decorations that decorate Magic Kingdom throughout the month.
Deluxe Resort Guests Receive One Exclusive Night
Disney is also making a noticeable adjustment to Extended Evening Hours.
Throughout much of the summer, eligible guests staying at Disney Deluxe Resorts and Deluxe Villas had multiple opportunities to enjoy extra time inside select parks after regular closing. In September, however, Magic Kingdom will host just one Extended Evening Hours event.
Disney has scheduled that exclusive offering for September 9 from 10 p.m. until midnight.
For guests staying at qualifying resorts, those additional two hours often provide one of the best chances to experience major attractions with shorter wait times after most visitors have left for the evening.
Plenty of Attractions Will Stay Open
Although Extended Evening Hours only appears once on Magic Kingdom’s September calendar, Disney plans to keep many popular attractions operating during the event.
Eligible guests should still be able to experience favorites including TRON Lightcycle / Run, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Space Mountain, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, Haunted Mansion, Pirates of the Caribbean, Peter Pan’s Flight, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, “it’s a small world,” Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Tomorrowland Speedway, The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Mickey’s PhilharMagic, Monsters, Inc. Laugh Floor, Country Bear Musical Jamboree, Astro Orbiter, Mad Tea Party, The Magic Carpets of Aladdin, Prince Charming Regal Carrousel, Swiss Family Treehouse, Under the Sea ~ Journey of The Little Mermaid, The Barnstormer, and Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room.
For Deluxe Resort guests, that lineup offers an opportunity to fit several headliner attractions into a relatively short amount of time while crowds are lower than they are during the day.
Summer Entertainment Is Wrapping Up
Another major change arrives just over a week into the month.
Disney has confirmed that its Cool Kids Summer promotion officially ends on September 8, bringing several seasonal offerings to a close across Walt Disney World.
At Magic Kingdom, the biggest change will be the conclusion of Jessie’s Roundup: A Rip-Roarin’ Revue! inside Diamond Horseshoe.
The Toy Story-themed production marked the return of live entertainment to that location for the first time in more than 20 years, giving families another indoor experience to enjoy during their visit.
The promotion also included special character meet-and-greet opportunities during Early Entry. Those additional experiences will also end when Cool Kids Summer wraps up.
Guests hoping to experience either offering should plan to visit before September 8.
Planning Ahead Will Be More Important Than Ever
While none of these changes completely transforms a day at Magic Kingdom, together they could have a noticeable impact on vacation plans.
Guests visiting during September will need to pay close attention to the Halloween Party schedule, since more than a dozen evenings will feature 6 p.m. park closings for anyone without party admission. Deluxe Resort guests, meanwhile, have only one scheduled opportunity to enjoy Extended Evening Hours at Magic Kingdom, making September 9 an important date for those eligible visitors.
Families traveling with young children may also want to arrive before September 8 if they hope to experience the remaining Cool Kids Summer entertainment before it disappears.
At the same time, September remains one of the most festive times to visit Magic Kingdom. Halloween decorations fill the park, seasonal entertainment takes center stage during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party, and Disney officially shifts from its summer schedule into the busy fall season. Understanding these confirmed changes before arriving can help guests avoid surprises and make the most of their visit.
