A sunny morning can quickly turn into a thunderstorm by the afternoon, and when that happens, Epic Universe has often become one of the worst places to spend your day.
Unlike Universal Studios Florida or Islands of Adventure, Epic Universe relies heavily on outdoor attractions. That design creates incredible sightlines and immersive lands, but it also means rain and lightning can dramatically affect the park’s operations. Guests have watched attraction after attraction close whenever storms rolled through Central Florida, leaving thousands of visitors funneled toward just a handful of indoor experiences.
Now, however, Universal appears to have made an important operational change that could make rainy days far less frustrating.
Donkey Kong’s coaster reportedly receives a major operational update
According to reports, Mine-Cart Madness inside Donkey Kong Country is now permitted to operate during ordinary rain, provided there is no active lightning in the surrounding area.
Previously, rain alone could sideline the family coaster. Under the reported change, the attraction would remain open through wet weather and only suspend operations when nearby lightning makes it unsafe to continue.
Universal has not officially announced the adjustment and could modify operating procedures again in the future, but if the report proves to be a permanent policy, it represents a meaningful improvement for one of Epic Universe’s most popular attractions.
Epic Universe has struggled whenever storms arrive
This is a much bigger deal than it might initially sound.
Epic Universe has earned widespread praise since opening, with many fans calling it one of the most beautiful theme parks ever built. Its themed environments are expansive, visually stunning, and packed with attractions that blur the line between rides and immersive experiences.
The downside is that many of those attractions exist outdoors.
During Orlando’s nearly daily summer storms, large portions of the park can become unavailable at the same time. While lightning closures are common across every Central Florida theme park, Epic Universe has been hit particularly hard because so much of its attraction lineup depends on favorable weather.
On some afternoons, guests have watched wait times completely disappear—not because crowds left, but because rides simply weren’t operating.
In fact, more than half of Epic Universe’s attractions have been susceptible to rain-related closures because they are located outdoors.
That has made weather one of the defining challenges of planning a visit.
Rain has often sent guests scrambling
Anyone who has visited during Florida’s rainy season understands the routine.
Dark clouds begin rolling in around lunchtime. Guests pull out ponchos while checking the Universal Orlando app. Within minutes, attraction status boards begin filling with temporary closures.
Soon afterward, nearly everyone heads toward the same indoor experiences.
That creates long waits almost instantly.
Visitors who had planned an entire afternoon around outdoor attractions suddenly find themselves rearranging their schedules, hoping rides reopen before park closing.
It has been one of the few consistent criticisms leveled at Epic Universe since opening.
The park itself isn’t doing anything wrong—Central Florida weather simply creates unique challenges—but the number of outdoor attractions has made those storms feel even more disruptive than they do at Universal’s older parks.
One ride staying open makes a noticeable difference
Mine-Cart Madness isn’t just another attraction.
The Donkey Kong coaster is one of the headline experiences inside SUPER NINTENDO WORLD and remains one of the park’s biggest draws. Its innovative ride system creates the illusion that mine carts leap across broken track sections, recreating moments from the classic Donkey Kong Country video games.
Whenever the coaster closed for rain, it removed one of Epic Universe’s signature attractions from the lineup.
Keeping it open during ordinary rainfall should help distribute guests more evenly throughout the park instead of forcing everyone toward indoor rides at once.
That won’t eliminate long waits during storms, but it should help reduce the bottlenecks that have become common on rainy afternoons.
It’s also good news for guests who planned their vacations months in advance.
Florida weather can be unpredictable, and many visitors only have one opportunity to experience Epic Universe. Losing several major attractions because of a passing shower has been disappointing for countless families.
This operational change gives guests a better chance of riding one of the park’s biggest attractions even if the skies open up.
Lightning will still change everything
There is one important limitation.
The reported change only applies to rain.
If lightning is detected near the park, Mine-Cart Madness will still close, just as other outdoor attractions do throughout Central Florida.
That’s standard practice across the theme park industry and isn’t unique to Universal.
Safety protocols require attractions to suspend operations whenever lightning enters the designated safety radius, regardless of whether it’s actively raining.
So while guests may be able to ride through a steady shower, thunderstorms will continue to interrupt operations.
A welcome improvement for rainy-day visitors
Operational adjustments like this may not generate the same excitement as a brand-new attraction, but they can have a major impact on the guest experience.
Epic Universe has already established itself as one of the world’s premier theme parks, yet weather has remained one of its biggest obstacles. Every attraction that can safely remain open during rain makes the park more reliable and gives visitors greater value for the price of admission.
If Mine-Cart Madness truly remains operational through ordinary rainfall going forward, it marks one of the most practical improvements Epic Universe has made since opening.
It won’t stop Florida’s famous afternoon storms from rolling in, and it certainly won’t overcome lightning delays, but it does mean rainy days may no longer derail quite as much of the experience.
For a park that has sometimes felt like the last place you wanted to be when storms arrived, that’s a significant step in the right direction.
