Disneyland Pushes Back Closure Date for 1965 Location
A Disneyland character breakfast can occupy considerably more space in a family’s plans than its reservation time suggests. There is the park reservation, the early start, the cost and, most importantly, the expectation that children—or adults with autograph books and no apologies—will meet Minnie Mouse and her friends over breakfast.
Guests planning that experience at Plaza Inn in August have now received a small but meaningful reprieve.
Disneyland has moved the beginning of Plaza Inn’s scheduled character-dining pause from August 10 to August 17, 2026. The revised date gives visitors one additional week to reserve Minnie & Friends – Breakfast in the Park before the experience temporarily becomes unavailable.
Disney still expects character dining to return in late September, but it has not announced a specific date.
Disneyland Moves Plaza Inn’s Character Dining Pause
The official Plaza Inn listing now tells guests: “The Character Dining experience at Plaza Inn will be temporarily unavailable starting August 17, 2026, and is expected to return in late September.”
That is a change from the August 10 date Disney previously posted. Inside the Magic’s earlier coverage of the Plaza Inn pause reflected that original schedule.
The distinction matters: Disney’s notice applies to the character-dining experience, not an announced closure of the entire restaurant.
Plaza Inn serves its character buffet during breakfast, while lunch and dinner operate without characters. Disney has not announced that those later meal periods will close throughout the same window. Its webpage continues to describe lunch and dinner separately, including the restaurant’s signature fried chicken.
Visitors should nevertheless check operating hours closer to their trip because Disney says its menus, hours and entertainment remain subject to change.
One More Week Helps, but September Remains Uncertain
Moving the starting date to August 17 gives guests arriving during the middle of the month an opportunity they previously appeared set to lose. Because Disneyland accepts Plaza Inn breakfast reservations up to 60 days in advance, affected visitors should search the Disneyland website or app rather than assume their dates remain unavailable under the old schedule.
The larger planning problem has not disappeared.
“Late September” is a return window, not a reopening date. A family visiting during that period cannot yet know whether Plaza Inn character dining will be available. Guests with their hearts set on the breakfast may need a backup reservation until Disney publishes something more precise.
The pause also overlaps part of Disneyland’s Halloween season, which begins August 21 in 2026. That timing increases the practical stakes for guests building seasonal trips around dining and character interactions, although Disney has not said the Halloween calendar caused or influenced the closure.
Plaza Inn is currently Disneyland Park’s only character-dining location, making the interruption more consequential than the loss of an ordinary breakfast service. Character meals remain available elsewhere around Disneyland Resort, including Storytellers Cafe at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Goofy’s Kitchen at the Disneyland Hotel, subject to their individual schedules and availability.
Those alternatives also carry different prices and formats. Plaza Inn’s breakfast recently increased from $55 to $58 for adults and from $33 to $35 for children, according to Inside the Magic’s coverage of Disneyland’s latest restaurant price changes.
Plaza Inn’s Pause Comes Amid Visible Exterior Work
Plaza Inn has recently shown signs of exterior work, including scrim installed around a rear corner of the building. A tree that had fallen near the restaurant was also reportedly replaced.
Those observations provide context, but they do not establish why the character experience is pausing. Disney has not publicly connected the August interruption to the scrim, tree replacement or a specific refurbishment project. It has also not announced changes to the dining room, buffet, menu or character lineup.
That separation is important. Construction near a restaurant may suggest maintenance, but it is not proof that Disney is rebuilding or substantially changing the experience.
Plaza Inn carries unusual historical weight even without Minnie Mouse at the breakfast table. The restaurant opened with Disneyland in 1955 as the Red Wagon Inn, a history reflected in Inside the Magic’s look at how Disneyland food has evolved. Its character breakfast also became a recognizable part of Disneyland’s recovery after the pandemic, returning in August 2021 after an extended interruption, as covered in Inside the Magic’s report on the return of Disneyland character dining.
The revised date now reduces this year’s interruption by seven days. It does not eliminate it.
Plaza Inn has already undergone another scheduling change this summer: its Paint the Night dining package ended before the parade’s final 2026 performances. Together, the changes make it particularly important for guests to verify which Plaza Inn experience they are booking rather than treating the restaurant’s schedule as a single all-day offering.
For now, August 17 is the date to remember. Guests visiting before then have another chance to dine with Minnie and her friends. Those arriving afterward should monitor Disney’s listing for an exact return—and resist reading more into the construction scrim than Disney has confirmed.
