While construction activity continues behind the scenes, the latest developments suggest guests may have to wait even longer than many originally hoped before stepping into Disney’s newest land. Disney has officially delayed nothing, but the pace of work and the growing list of other major projects across the resort paint a very different picture than fans may have expected.
Disney Has Big Plans for Villains Land
It’s easy to understand why Villains Land has generated so much excitement. Disney isn’t simply adding another attraction or restaurant—it’s creating an entirely new area dedicated to some of its most iconic antagonists.

- Reported: A Hades-themed restaurant inspired by Hercules (1997), offering an immersive dining experience based on the ruler of the Underworld.
- Reported: A roller coaster based on The Emperor’s New Groove (2000), with Yzma and Kronk playing central roles in the experience.
- Confirmed: Retail locations and immersive environments designed to give Disney villains a permanent home inside Magic Kingdom.
As exciting as those plans remain, actually visiting the land may take considerably longer than many guests anticipated.
The Timeline May Be Slipping
Disney still has not announced an official opening date for Villains Land.
Based on infrastructure work and utility permits filed for the massive expansion, many observers have expected the project to arrive sometime around 2029 or 2030. Behind the scenes, crews continue preparing the area with grading work, utility installations, and other foundational construction that guests rarely see during a visit.
Those permits have offered the clearest clues regarding Disney’s internal construction schedule, with several stretching into late 2029.
However, permits don’t always tell the full story.
Over the past several years, Disney has frequently allowed permits to expire before filing new ones as projects evolve. That’s happened across multiple developments around Walt Disney World, making it difficult to assume every projected completion date will hold.
When you also consider the sheer number of major construction projects currently competing for resources across the resort, it’s becoming increasingly reasonable to wonder whether Villains Land ultimately arrives later than many early projections suggested.
Rather than opening at the beginning of the 2029-2030 window, a debut in the middle of the decade, or even later, now feels like a realistic possibility based on the current pace of development.
Of course, Disney has not confirmed any delay or revised timeline. Until the company announces an official opening date, every projection remains just that—a projection.
Still, the amount of work left to complete makes it difficult to ignore the possibility that guests could be waiting longer than expected.
Walt Disney World Has an Enormous Construction List
One reason expectations continue to shift is that Villains Land isn’t the only massive project underway.
Disney’s construction teams are currently spread across nearly every corner of Walt Disney World, with several major expansions and refurbishments happening at the same time:
- Disney’s Animal Kingdom: Work continues on Pueblo Esperanza, the Tropical Americas expansion replacing the former DinoLand U.S.A. area. The new land will feature attractions inspired by Encanto (2021) and Indiana Jones while completely transforming a large section of the park.
- Disney’s Hollywood Studios: The new Magic of Disney Animation experience is scheduled to open in September 2026, adding another major offering as the park continues its evolution. Plus, the exciting Monstroplis area is gaining steam.
- Magic Kingdom: Construction is underway on Piston Peak National Park, the Cars (2006)-inspired expansion replacing Rivers of America, Tom Sawyer Island, and the Liberty Square Riverboat area. It’s one of the largest construction projects the park has seen in decades.
- Tomorrowland: Carousel of Progress has officially closed for an extensive overhaul and is expected to reopen in 2027 with major updates.
Taken together, it’s an extraordinary amount of construction happening simultaneously. Every project requires engineers, designers, contractors, and countless other resources, making it understandable that timelines can shift as priorities change.
Fans May Need Even More Patience
Villains Land still represents one of the most exciting additions ever announced for Magic Kingdom, and there’s little reason to believe Disney has scaled back its ambitious vision for the project.
The question isn’t whether the land is coming. It’s when guests will finally get to experience it.
With infrastructure work continuing, permits evolving, and multiple expensive projects competing for attention across Walt Disney World, expectations for the opening are becoming increasingly cautious.
Disney may still surprise everyone with faster progress than expected. But based on everything happening across the resort today, a debut later than the original 2029-2030 expectations no longer feels out of the question.
For fans eager to finally step inside Disney’s kingdom of villains, the wait could end up being even longer than anyone hoped.
