The complete retirement of DinoLand U.S.A. marked the end of an era at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, but the speed at which its replacement is rising is nothing short of breathtaking. Work on the highly anticipated Tropical Americas expansion is moving at an aggressive pace. With an official opening target set for 2027, construction crews are working around the clock to transform the former primeval playground into the fictional village of Pueblo Esperanza.

This ambitious 11-acre land will immerse guests in one of the most biodiverse and culturally rich regions on Earth, spanning parts of Mexico, Central America, and South America. Thanks to recent, highly detailed aerial photography from legendary theme park tracker @bioreconstruct, we now have a clear bird’s-eye view of the massive structural milestones taking shape across the construction site this June. From rising concrete archways to hidden rooftop secrets, the physical foundation of Pueblo Esperanza is officially going vertical.

The Temple of Indy: Translating the Maya Facade

On the eastern edge of the construction site, the former DINOSAUR attraction show building is undergoing a complete architectural metamorphosis. The ride system is being completely reimagined into a state-of-the-art Indiana Jones adventure, where guests will join the iconic archaeologist to explore a newly discovered Maya temple.

According to the latest aerial images captured by @bioreconstruct, the massive steel framework that will form the backbone of the Maya temple facade remains a towering presence. Erected in late May, this multi-story steel grid is affixed directly to the pre-existing front of the show building. While there have been no major structural additions to the exterior frame over the last few weeks, crews are actively working on the integration points to ensure that the heavy-theme molding can be attached safely to the older building. Because the steel framework rises several stories above the surrounding tree line, it serves as an early visual anchor for the entire land.

Unveiling the Casita: Encanto’s Rooftop Secrets and Dirt Hills

Directly adjacent to the Indiana Jones attraction sits what is arguably the most complex build on the property: the first-ever ride-through attraction themed to Disney’s Encanto. This brand-new, massive dark ride will invite guests inside the magical Madrigal home, La Casaita, on the very day Antonio receives his spiritual gift.

With the main exterior shell of the massive ride building largely enclosed, the focus has shifted to two highly distinct structural developments on the exterior:

1. The Mysterious White Rooftop Cubes

Eagle-eyed viewers of @bioreconstruct’s aerial photography will immediately notice a vast grid of soft white boxes, blocks, and cubes scattered across the rooftop of the Encanto show building. Theme park engineering practices suggest these are massive blocks of industrial architectural foam. Imagineers routinely use these lightweight, weather-resistant foam blocks as a carving base. Crews will stack, shape, and coat these cubes in specialized concrete to form the rolling background hills and mountainous terrain of the Colombian rainforest, completely masking the flat, industrial roof from guest sightlines.

2. Rising Foundations for the Casita

At the front of the show building, the physical home of the Madrigal family is quickly rising. Fresh dirt has officially been backfilled into the core base of the Casita framework, and the structural foundations have been completely poured and filled with solid concrete. A maze of utility pipes, conduits, and staging materials is visible within the footprint.

Furthermore, new concrete forms have appeared directly in front of the Casita’s main entrance—one shaped like a sharp “U” and another featuring a long straight line with a slight bend. Massive slopes of fresh dirt are currently being graded around these forms, perfectly matching Disney’s original concept art, which depicts the magical Casita sitting proudly atop a small, sloped hill.

Imagineering In-Sight: By utilizing lightweight foam on the rooftops and heavy concrete forms surrounded by graded earth on the ground, Disney is creating a forced-perspective mountain range that will make Pueblo Esperanza feel infinitely larger than its physical footprint.

Pueblo Esperanza’s Central Hub: The Carousel and the New Archways

At the heart of the village will be a beautiful, locally themed central plaza anchored by a brand-new, wood-carved animal carousel that celebrates classic Disney animals from various animated features.

The area surrounding the carousel is experiencing the most rapid structural evolution on the property this month. A brand-new support building has been standing near the octagonal carousel frame since the end of May. Where empty footers and exposed steel beams once sat, a fresh concrete pad and concrete block walls have risen, indicating a major shop or structural facade is well underway.

Gateways into the Village

The most visually exciting update for guests walking past the perimeter construction walls is the appearance of several brand-new concrete archways framing the primary walkways.

  • The Left Path: On one side of the primary pedestrian path leading deep into the village, workers have successfully erected two fully formed concrete archways. A central archway connecting them is currently being framed out with wood and steel supports.
  • The Right Path: On the opposite side of the road, two smaller, complementary archways have already been fully poured and stripped of their yellow construction forms. A massive concrete formwork structure stands directly adjacent to them, surrounded by heavily staged framing materials. WDW News Today

These archways will eventually be themed to resemble weathered, historic Spanish-colonial stone architecture, serving as atmospheric gateways that guide guests from the lush jungle pathways into the bustling village market.

Preserving History: The Hacienda Transformation

While a large portion of DinoLand U.S.A. was completely demolished to clear the way for the new village, Disney is strategically saving time and capital by repurposing its largest pre-existing structures.

Recent building permits filed by Walt Disney Imagineering confirm that the former Restaurantosaurus and Chester & Hester’s DINOSAUR Treasures buildings are being preserved and heavily rethemed rather than torn down. Restaurantosaurus is slated to become a grand, open-air hacienda-style quick-service restaurant—one of the largest dining spaces in the entire park.

As of this week, the core structures of both buildings remain unaltered on the outside, but external support work has officially commenced. A new, small wooden support structure has been erected directly to the right of the main dining building. More importantly, construction crews have cleared and paved a smooth dirt access road stretching from the front of the Restaurantosaurus plaza directly across the site to the Indiana Jones attraction. This allows heavy machinery and concrete trucks to safely navigate the sprawling, muddy site without disrupting the delicate underground utility lines being laid across the village center.
