Disney is giving Stitch fans another reason to head to the theater, and the announcement comes much sooner than many people expected. After an incredible run at the box office and a wave of renewed popularity for the mischievous blue alien, Disney has officially confirmed that Stitch will return to the big screen again. While plenty of fans assumed the franchise’s next theatrical appearance would be tied to the already announced sequel, Disney had something else waiting in the wings.

Stitch Has Been Winning Over Fans for More Than Two Decades

Long before the live-action remake became a global sensation, Stitch had already secured his place as one of Disney’s most beloved characters. When Lilo & Stitch (2002) debuted, it introduced audiences to an unlikely friendship between a lonely Hawaiian girl and a genetically engineered alien intent on causing chaos.

The movie blended comedy, heart, and memorable characters in a way that stood out from many other Disney animated films released during the era. Its central message about family, acceptance, and finding where you belong continues to resonate with audiences of all ages.

Over the years, Stitch has remained one of Disney’s most recognizable characters. He has starred in television series, direct-to-video sequels, merchandise collections, and theme park appearances around the world. Even more than 20 years after his debut, Stitch continues to attract new generations of fans, while longtime viewers still consider the original animated film one of Disney’s best modern classics.

That lasting popularity helped set the stage for Disney’s decision to bring the franchise back in a major way.

The Live-Action Remake Became a Historic Success

Disney’s decision to remake Lilo & Stitch (2025) paid off massively.

The film became one of the biggest theatrical success stories of the year, exceeding expectations around the globe. It earned more than $1.038 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing live-action-and-animation hybrid film ever released.

That remarkable performance proved there was still enormous demand for Stitch on the big screen. Fans who grew up with the original returned to theaters alongside families, introducing the character to younger audiences for the first time.

The movie’s success also gave Disney another billion-dollar franchise to build upon. With Stitch once again becoming one of the company’s hottest properties, it quickly became clear that Disney had no intention of letting the momentum fade.

Disney Confirms a New Stitch Adventure for Theaters

Before audiences return for another full-length adventure, Disney has something smaller planned.

The company has officially confirmed that a brand-new theatrical short, Lilo & Scratch, will debut in theaters in November 2026.

The first footage premiered during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, offering fans an early glimpse at the new project. According to Deadline, the story introduces a brand-new furry character—a cat determined to eat Stitch’s favorite fish, Pudge. Naturally, that creates plenty of opportunities for Stitch’s trademark chaos.

The short also reunites several familiar voices and faces. Chris Sanders returns as the voice of Stitch, a role he originated more than two decades ago. Maia Kealoha, who portrayed Lilo in the live-action remake, also returns to voice the young Hawaiian girl in the animated short.

Rather than waiting several more years for Stitch’s next theatrical appearance, fans will get another adventure much sooner than expected. The shorter format should offer a fun way to bridge the gap between the recent blockbuster and what’s coming next for the franchise.

And as exciting as that announcement is, Disney isn’t stopping there.

The Live-Action Sequel Is Officially on the Way

The new short isn’t the only Stitch project Disney has confirmed.

Following the overwhelming success of Lilo & Stitch (2025), Disney has officially announced that a live-action sequel is now in development.

Even better for longtime fans, Chris Sanders will direct the next installment while continuing to voice Stitch. His involvement both behind the camera and behind the microphone gives many fans confidence that the sequel will stay true to the heart and personality that made the original character so popular.

Disney has already set a theatrical release date as well. Lilo & Stitch‘s live-action sequel is scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 26, 2028.

Although story details remain under wraps, the sequel’s announcement wasn’t exactly surprising after the first movie crossed the billion-dollar mark. Disney rarely lets that kind of success go without expanding the franchise, especially when it appeals to multiple generations of moviegoers.

Between the upcoming short and the sequel, Stitch appears poised to remain one of Disney’s biggest stars for years to come.

Stitch’s Big Screen Future Looks Brighter Than Ever

Only a year after delivering one of Disney’s biggest theatrical hits, Stitch is already preparing for another return to theaters.

First comes Lilo & Scratch in November 2026, giving fans a brand-new adventure featuring familiar characters and an amusing new rival. After that, Disney will continue the story with the live-action sequel, which arrives on May 26, 2028.

For a character who first appeared more than two decades ago, Stitch continues proving that his popularity isn’t slowing down anytime soon. If the success of the recent blockbuster is any indication, audiences will likely be more than ready when Experiment 626 makes his next theatrical appearance.
