Universal Orlando Resort has spent the last few years looking ahead. Epic Universe introduced entirely new worlds, new technology, and some of the resort’s most ambitious attractions ever. At the same time, though, Universal has quietly shown a growing appreciation for the movies and franchises that helped build its reputation in the first place. Between anniversary celebrations, nostalgic merchandise, themed experiences, and the return of beloved characters, the company has made it clear that its history still matters.

With Epic Universe also leaving plenty of room for future growth, it’s easy to see why fans have started wondering what could come next. Universal hasn’t announced another major land for the park, but the resort was designed with expansion in mind. If one of those future additions ever celebrates the studio’s classic franchises, it could become one of the most exciting projects Universal has ever built.

Epic Universe Still Has Plenty of Room to Grow

Even before Epic Universe officially opened, Universal executives described the park as a destination that could continue to expand for years. Large undeveloped parcels surround the existing lands, and the park’s hub-and-spoke layout makes it relatively easy to add entirely new portals or expand existing ones over time.

Recent construction activity around the resort and ongoing work beyond guest areas have naturally fueled plenty of discussion among fans. While Universal has not announced what any future expansion could include, the company clearly planned ahead by leaving itself the flexibility to grow as demand increases.

That has sparked countless ideas about what kind of land would best complement Epic Universe’s current lineup. One concept continues appearing in fan conversations more than almost any other.

A Retro Portal Could Be the Perfect Next Step

Imagine walking through a new portal with a glowing sign overhead that simply reads, “Gotta Get Back in Time!”

Instead of focusing on a single piece of intellectual property, the land could celebrate the films that helped turn Universal into a Hollywood powerhouse. While Epic Universe introduces guests to brand-new adventures, this portal could embrace the studio’s incredible legacy.

It’s a concept fans have discussed for years. Universal has no shortage of classic franchises that remain popular decades after their theatrical debuts, yet many of them have little or no permanent presence inside the parks today.

A retro-themed land would also feel different from anything currently offered at Epic Universe. Rather than transporting guests to a single fictional world, it could serve as a celebration of Universal’s greatest movie moments across multiple generations.

The Attractions Would Be Incredible

If Universal ever explored this idea, Back to the Future would feel like an obvious centerpiece.

A high-speed DeLorean racing attraction could send guests through different eras while competing against Biff and other time-traveling vehicles. Universal already proved decades ago that Marty McFly’s adventures work beautifully in a theme park setting, and modern ride technology could create something far beyond what fans experienced before.

Ghostbusters also deserves a shot at a major attraction.

Instead of simply watching ghosts appear, guests could actively join the action using interactive proton blasters. Think of a ride inspired by Men in Black Alien Attack, except riders would capture ghosts alongside both the original Ghostbusters team and the newer generation. Every ride could feature different hauntings, encouraging repeat visits.

Then there’s Jaws.

Many longtime Universal fans still miss the original attraction that once welcomed guests at Universal Studios Florida. While recreating that ride exactly might not make sense today, a modern version certainly could. Universal could build a thrilling boat adventure using today’s animatronics and special effects or even create a dark ride that puts guests directly into Amity Island as Bruce circles nearby.

Each attraction would celebrate Universal’s history while introducing entirely new experiences for younger audiences who never rode the originals.

Other ‘Throwback’ Experiences

The attractions would likely be only part of the appeal.

A recreation of Lou’s Cafe from Back to the Future could become one of Epic Universe’s most popular quick-service restaurants. The menu could include playful nods to Hill Valley while surrounding guests with props and references from throughout the trilogy.

Nearby, a Ghostbusters-themed snack cart operated by Slimer could serve themed desserts, frozen drinks, and colorful treats inspired by ectoplasm. It would fit perfectly with the franchise’s playful tone while giving guests another memorable photo opportunity.

Merchandise could be equally impressive. Replica proton packs, Ghost Traps, DeLorean collectibles, Amity Island apparel, shark-themed souvenirs, and vintage Universal-inspired clothing could easily fill multiple stores.

Character encounters would make the land even stronger. Guests could meet Marty McFly, Doc Brown, the Ghostbusters, and perhaps even Captain Quint or Chief Brody throughout the day. Those interactions would give longtime fans something they’ve wanted for years while introducing younger visitors to some of Universal’s most recognizable characters.

A Love Letter to Universal’s Legacy

For now, this remains pure speculation. Universal has not announced a retro-themed expansion, nor has it confirmed any plans involving Back to the Future, Ghostbusters, Jaws, or similar classic franchises at Epic Universe.

Still, it’s easy to understand why the idea continues gaining attention among fans. Universal has embraced its legacy more than ever in recent years, and Epic Universe was intentionally built with room to evolve.

If the resort eventually decides to dedicate one of those future expansions to the movies that helped define generations of fans, it could become one of the most celebrated additions Universal has ever made. Sometimes, looking toward the future starts by remembering what made people fall in love with the parks in the first place.
