A Major Shift May Be Coming to Animal Kingdom’s New Experience

Disney’s Animal Kingdom has always been different from the other Walt Disney World parks. While thrill rides and character experiences draw plenty of attention across the resort, Animal Kingdom continues to stand apart because of its focus on wildlife and conservation.

Now, Disney is preparing to take one of its newest animal experiences to the next level.

After quietly introducing the Jumping Junction habitat earlier this year, Disney has confirmed that the current version of the experience is only the beginning. While access remains limited today, the long-term goal is much bigger. Eventually, Disney wants every guest visiting the area to have the opportunity to walk directly through the habitat alongside kangaroos and wallabies.

For Animal Kingdom fans, that could become one of the most unique wildlife encounters anywhere at Walt Disney World.

A Different Kind of Animal Experience

Animal Kingdom offers guests countless opportunities to see animals throughout the park. From the savannas of Kilimanjaro Safaris to the walking trails throughout Africa and Asia, visitors regularly find themselves just feet away from creatures from around the world.

Instead of viewing animals from behind barriers or from designated observation areas, guests are eventually expected to share the same space as the kangaroos and wallabies that call the habitat home. Disney has described the experience as a walk-through environment where visitors can move along a designated path while animals roam nearby.

That creates a much more immersive encounter than many guests are accustomed to experiencing at the parks.

Of course, Disney is approaching the rollout carefully.

Why Access Is Still Limited

Anyone hoping to visit Jumping Junction right now may notice that the experience operates very differently than Disney’s long-term vision.

Currently, only small groups are invited into the habitat at a time. During the initial testing period, fewer than 100 guests per hour were permitted inside. Each group is escorted by a member of Disney’s animal care team, who provides instructions and explains the rules before guests begin their walk.

The experience itself is relatively brief, lasting approximately five to ten minutes.

While some visitors may be eager for Disney to remove the restrictions immediately, there is a very important reason for the slow approach.

The animals come first.

Disney’s zoological teams are carefully introducing the kangaroos and wallabies to their new environment while simultaneously helping them become comfortable with guests moving through the habitat. Rather than rushing the process, Disney is allowing the animals to adjust at their own pace.

That means the timeline isn’t driven by construction schedules or operational goals. Instead, it depends entirely on how the animals respond.

Disney Wants to Open It to Everyone

The biggest takeaway from Disney’s recent comments is that the current experience is not intended to be permanent.

According to Disney, the limited-access version serves as a training and acclimation phase. The company has confirmed that its ultimate goal is to welcome all guests into the habitat once the animals are comfortable with the expanded interaction.

That would represent a significant change from what visitors see today.

Instead of waiting for occasional small-group invitations, guests could potentially enter the area as part of their normal visit through Animal Kingdom. While Disney has not provided details regarding operational procedures, capacity limits, or accessibility plans for the final version, the company has made it clear that broader guest access remains the objective.

For many Animal Kingdom fans, that’s exciting news.

The park has long been praised for creating meaningful animal encounters that feel educational while still being entertaining. A fully operational Jumping Junction experience would fit perfectly within that philosophy.

Meet the Habitat’s New Residents

One of the reasons Jumping Junction has attracted so much attention is because of the animals themselves.

Guests entering the habitat may encounter Western Grey Kangaroos, Red Kangaroos, and Red-necked Wallabies. These iconic Australian species have become an immediate favorite among visitors curious about the new addition.

Although kangaroos and wallabies are closely related, there are some noticeable differences.

The most obvious is size. Kangaroos tend to be significantly larger, while wallabies are generally smaller and more compact. Both animals belong to the marsupial family, meaning their young continue developing inside a pouch after birth. Disney has even noted that several of the kangaroos currently living in the habitat are carrying joeys.

That adds another layer of excitement for guests hoping to visit the experience in the coming months.

Of course, Disney continues to emphasize that guests are not permitted to touch the animals. The focus remains on observation and shared space rather than direct physical interaction.

A Natural Fit for Animal Kingdom’s Future

The timing of Jumping Junction’s debut is particularly interesting.

Animal Kingdom is already experiencing major changes, including the arrival of Bluey’s Wild World. The kangaroo and wallaby habitat serves as a natural connection to the Australian themes associated with the popular franchise while also reinforcing Animal Kingdom’s broader mission of connecting guests with wildlife.

As Disney continues investing in new experiences across the park, attractions like Jumping Junction demonstrate that not every addition has to be a ride.

Some of the most memorable moments at Animal Kingdom happen when guests connect with live animals in ways they never expected.

That’s exactly what Disney appears to be creating here.

When Will Full Access Begin?

The biggest question remains unanswered.

Disney has not announced when Jumping Junction will fully open to all guests. Company officials have repeatedly stressed that the process depends entirely on the animals and their comfort level with increasing guest interaction.

While some visitors may hope for a quick expansion, Disney’s animal care teams seem committed to taking a patient approach.

In many ways, that’s exactly what guests would want.

After all, the success of the experience depends on creating an environment where both visitors and animals feel comfortable sharing the space. If Disney achieves that balance, Jumping Junction could become one of the most distinctive experiences not only at Animal Kingdom, but anywhere at Walt Disney World.

For now, guests will have to settle for the limited-access version. But if Disney’s plans move forward as expected, the day may not be far away when every visitor can walk the same path as kangaroos and wallabies during a trip to Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
